Rochelle Humes has spoken about how scared she was following a colourism row that broke out last year. Rochelle, 32, who has recently been presenting This Morning with Alison Hammond, fronted a Channel 4 documentary centred on black women and childbirth in 2021. However, amid claims Rochelle had replaced blogger and presenter Candice Brathwaite, a debate ensued about colourism on social media.
Candice later confirmed that the pair were actually working on two completely different programs on the same subject, and that wires had been crossed. However, Rochelle has since revealed she received death threats in the wake of the debate, leaving her too afraid to even take her children to school. I didn't want to make it about the fact that actually I was scared to take my kid to nursery that day because I got death threats." Things were so bad that her husband, Marvin, even took her phone off her.
She recalled: "I turned everything off, I turned off comments and then I was like, 'I'm not dealing with this, I'm just going to live my life' and I literally cried for 48 hours and was devastated." The documentary was on a subject close to Rochelle's heart, and she was proud to be able to put it in the spotlight. However, before she knew it, everything had been turned on its head. "People didn't know those stats and I think that was, for me, really important that we get that on a big stage. Then overnight the dial turned," she said.
