Council road maintenance has fallen to its lowest level in five years amid mounting fury among Greater Manchester residents over the growing number of potholes across the city region.
Just 4,144 miles of roads received any kind of treatment by local authorities in the 2022/23 financial year - down 45 per cent from the total of 7,510 miles five years earlier, according to new research by RAC.
Meanwhile more than a third (35 per cent) of councils including Tameside failed to carry out any road resurfacing work during the last financial year, the research found.

It comes amid a surge in pothole-related breakdowns in recent months, with RAC figures showing they reached a five-year high in the run-up to Christmas.
According to data from a Freedom of Information request, four of nine boroughs in Greater Manchester were found to have a drop in the number of potholes repaired in the 2022/23 year. Among them, Trafford was lowest with 22 percent less potholes being repaired than in the 2021/22 year. Wigan, Stockport, and Oldham also saw their repair rates fall.
In Trafford locals claim they are plagued with potholes on 'nearly every street’. Sheila Atherton, 66, told the Manchester Evening News: "The state of the roads around here are disgusting. Every road around here is full of potholes and it's just getting worse.This used to be a nice area. We've been complaining about it to the council for ages but nothing has been done.”
