Rio Ferdinand says Manchester City players do not have the pressure of former glory years weighing on their shoulders when going for the Champions League - unlike Manchester United.
The former England defender won Europe’s elite competition with the Red Devils in 2008, and also made it to two further finals in 2009 and 2011. United have won the competition on three occasions while City are yet to lift the trophy despite making it to last year’s showpiece.
Pep Guardiola’s side edged past a very defensive Atletico Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday night in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash at the Etihad. Speaking before the game, Ferdinand told BT Sport that during his days at United, he felt the pressure to live up to the standards of previous Champions League-winning players. He said that City don’t have that burden hanging over their heads when they enter the pitch.
“For these players, I was in a similar situation I came to Man United, won the league and a few different things but couldn’t get near winning the Champions League,” he said.
“You begin to think ‘is this going to be beyond us?’ And it crept into my mind, is it going to be like ‘is everyone in this dressing room, the Roy Keane’s etcetera, but I’m not going to be able to get it?’”
Speaking about walking past images of former United players who lifted the Champions League, he added: “These guys (City) don’t have that pressure because no one before them has won it so they don’t have that pressure
