Sir Jim Ratcliffe will not be short of problems to address if he takes charge of footballing operations at Manchester United and two former players have identified one of his biggest challenges.
The Ineos founder and petrochemicals billionaire looks set to take a minority share in United, following the withdrawal of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani from the bidding process. Having initially proposed to take a majority, it looks as though he will invest around £1.4billion for 25 per cent of the club.
Concern regarding the retention of power by the Glazers has been somewhat eased by reports that Ratcliffe will take over with the running of United from a football perspective. That will likely involve control over transfers, an area in which the club have been sub-standard for so long.

It was an issue pinpointed by former captain Rio Ferdinand ahead of United's 1-0 Champions League win over FC Copenhagen on Tuesday. He was asked specifically about Casemiro, who cost £70million last summer and penned a four-year deal, aged 30.
"I don’t think you look at just one player in this situation, if you look at over the last 10 years or so, the recruitment of players is awful," Ferdinand told TNT Sports. "Who out of those players would you say have been sold for more than what they paid?
"That tells you everything because it’s poor recruitment and poor coaching staff because they’re not improving when they get here. There’s different areas of the club that need to be looked at because it’s not just one area that needs improving."
