Richard Madeley reveals he was 'beaten' with bamboo stick by 'broken' father

Richard Madeley has candidly discussed the relationship he had with his father Christopher Holt Madeley.The Good Morning Britain host, 65, has described their strained relationship and shares his belief that his dad was sexually abused when he was sent to boarding school as a teenager. Richard said his dad would hit him "five or six times a year" with a bamboo stick.
He described: "That went on until I was about nine or ten and he went a bit too far, hit me too many times, and my mother had a word and that was that." I didn’t feel it was out of the ordinary — other boys got hit by their parents — but I didn’t like it.
I wish it hadn’t happened. "My father was basically f***ed up by boarding school.
He was a very happy farmer’s boy, but when he was 15 my grandparents discovered he had the beginnings of a girlfriend, which they thought the road to perdition, so they packed him off to this ghastly place." Richard said his dad spoke with a Shropshire accent and was considered an "outsider" at the prep school. He added: "I have a strong suspicion he was sexually abused in some way.
He never said that but there were some pointers along the way." Richard's father passed away at the age of 49 while he was on a honeymoon with his first wife.The TV star added that his dad had been "very unhappy" at the school he attended, and felt "betrayed" by his parents. Richard is famously married to wife Judy Finnigan, and Richard recently admitted he almost accidentally revealed his daughter Chloe’s exciting pregnancy weeks before she and her husband
