Richard Rankin is currently appearing as DS John Rebus in the BBC TV adaptation of Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus novels, and has spoken out about the moment that changed his life and career and led to him winning such an iconic role. The Scottish actor found everything changed for him when he accepted the part in 2015 of Roger Wakefield in Outlander, the hugely successful period fantasy drama that also stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe.
“The biggest thing has been the commitment,” he told The Herald, having now played the role for almost a decade. “Staying focused and committed, keeping track of where the character is at and where he is going is a lot of work.
That is one of the biggest challenges and, at the same time, one of the most rewarding aspects.
Outlander is in my life pretty much every day, which I certainly can’t complain about. We have a great fan base and it seems to be getting more popular as we go on.” The series, about a Second World War nurse named Claire, who time travels back to 18th century Scotland where she falls in love with rugged highlander Jamie Fraser, is based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon and has so far run for six full seasons and half of season seven (the second half is due to be streamed this November).
The cast are currently filming the final eighth season, and there is also a prequel series being made called Blood of My Blood, which will focus both on Jamie’s parents’ love story and Claire’s parents’ relationship around the time of the First World War. Richard’s character in Outlander first appeared in the second season, after Claire had travelled back to the 20th century to raise her daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton).
