Queen Elizabeth has pulled out of the annual Maundy Service that's set to take place at St George's Chapel in Windsor on April 14.The service happens each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday.The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall will take the 95 year old monarch's place, and will meet the Dean of Windsor, The Right Reverend David Conner KCVO and the Lord High Almoner, the Right Reverend Dr. John Inge.
ITV Royal News Editor Chris Ship tweeted on Friday 8 April: "Another event in the royal calendar and another cancellation by the Queen. She has asked that Prince Charles and Camilla represent her at the annual Maundy Thursday Service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
We are told the Queen wanted to provide clarity now for those attending." He went on: "This is the first time the Prince of Wales has stepped in for the Queen at the traditional Royal Maundy Service. Usually the Queen presents “alms” to pensioners for their community service.The Queen didn’t want to overshadow the service by pulling out on the day." During the service that the Queen usually attends, the monarch distributes gifts – known as Maundy money – according to the number of years she has lived to the local people of the cathedral or abbey the event is being held.
Early on in her reign, Queen Elizabeth decided that Maundy money should not just be distributed to the people of London, and vowed to travel to various cathedrals or abbeys to give gifts to local people each year.
