The Duke of Cambridge has congratulated England midfielder Jill Scott on her career as she announced her retirement, joking he would not miss her “slide tackles”. Prince William, president of the FA, wrote in a personal tweet: “A pioneer of Women’s football and a great team player." The 40 year old, who recently confirmed his family move to Windsor, continued: “@JillScottJS8 congratulations on a wonderful career, it’s been a pleasure to get to know you.Tiny bit pleased there won’t be any more slide tackles during ‘friendly’ kickabouts… W”. Scott, 35, opened up about her decision to retire on Twitter as she wrote: “Right, we’re not crying.
I promised myself. I’m retiring from football. And I’m leaving with a gold medal swinging from my neck.” And fans were quick to comment as one person shared: "Jill you were superb - enjoy your retirement but hope you stay in football in some role as you have a lot of experience & knowledge to develop upcoming young players".
Another said: "Wow - this is the best farewell ever. Crying on my train home from work but also filled with all the joy and love that pours out of this message." While a third added: "Absolute legend. You have made our country proud, but most importantly, you have made yourself proud.
So glad you ended your career the way you did. You deserved it.This isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning".
The footballer’s decision to hang up her boots comes just over three weeks since helping the Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory. Scott had been without a club after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season. She earned 161 senior international caps after making her England debut in 2006 and scored 27 goals for the national side.
