Yeshiva University’s Pride Alliance offered to delay its efforts to gain university recognition on Wednesday, Sept. 21, after the school suspended all student activities rather than recognize the LGBTQ group. On Sept.
14, the Supreme Court said the school must temporarily comply with a New York court order to recognize the LGBTQ club.Yeshiva University, an Orthodox Jewish college in New York City, avoided doing so by pausing all student group activity.Following that measure, the Pride Alliance offered to stay the New York court order. In a statement to The New York Times, the group called the decision “painful.”“We do not want Y.U.
to punish our fellow students by ending all student activities while it circumvents its responsibilities,” the group said. “Y.U.
is attempting to hold all of its students hostage while it deploys manipulative legal tactics, all in an effort to avoid treating our club equally.”According to the Times, the university said on Thursday that it accepted the Pride Alliance’s proposal to delay recognition. School officials told the Times that other student groups can resume activities after the upcoming Jewish holidays. The stay marks a temporary cease-fire after escalations in their conflict, but Yeshiva University is continuing the legal fight to permanently avoid recognizing the Pride Alliance. Last year, after Yeshiva University refused to recognize the Pride Alliance, the student group sued, claiming the university was illegally discriminating.New York Supreme Court Judge Lynn Kotler upheld the group’s claim in June, ordering the school to recognize the Pride Alliance. The university then brought its suit to the Supreme Court, but in a 5-4 decision on procedural grounds, the court ordered YU to

Selome Hailu SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Ramy” Season 3. Ramy is suffering an identity crisis. The character, that is. “Ramy” the show, as well as its creator and star Ramy Youssef, couldn’t be in a more confident place creatively. After Season 2 finale “You Are Naked in Front of Your Sheikh” saw Ramy confess to Zainab (MaameYaa Boafo) on their wedding night that he’d cheated on her with his own cousin (Rosaline Elbay) the night before, Season 3 begins with a full embrace of the dirtbag Ramy has become. He’s left his job with his uncle Naseem (also a dirtbag, played by Laith Nakli) to start his own competing business in New York’s diamond district, and having lost the religious guidance of Zainab’s father, Sheikh Ali Malik (Mahershala Ali), he is nothing outside of his work. He’s rich now, but nearly friendless, especially neglecting his longtime best friend Steve (Steve Way).

problematic uncle in the industry family, certain to entertain and disturb in equal measure, depending on what one is willing to overlook when the sausage is being made (or even, considering some reports, when he’s away from the factory). That the Oscar-nominated writer-director is in the mix again with the period comedy-adventure “Amsterdam” after seven years away (since 2015’s lumpy “Joy”) indicates a willingness in Hollywood to endure the reminders of his behavioral issues and to bet on the recipe of star power, emotional smarts and provocative farce that forged “Flirting with Disaster,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle.”Only the first ingredient is in evidence with “Amsterdam,” however, and no amount of wattage from Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Zoe Saldana, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek or Robert De Niro — or even an A-list B-team of Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Mike Myers and Michael Shannon — can lift this flat, unfunny genre-fluid whatsit from its performative stumbling toward contemporary relevance. At first, when it’s 1933 New York, we sense an eccentric buddy-picture in the making, centered on themes of integration and the treatment of veterans. Bale’s character (and semi-narrator) is Burt Berendsen, a scraggly, half-Catholic/half-Jewish doctor focused on new medicines for wounded Great War soldiers like himself (he lost an eye) and estranged from his status-conscious Park Avenue wife (Riseborough).

According to The Commentator, Yeshiva University’s student newspaper, school officials sent an email saying that as the Jewish High Holy Days approach, the university will “hold off on all undergraduate club activities while it immediately takes steps to follow the roadmap provided by the US Supreme Court to protect YU’s religious freedom.”The freeze came two days after the Supreme Court narrowly decided, on a 5-4 vote, not to hear an emergency appeal of a New York state court’s ruling that the university had discriminated against the YU Pride Alliance by refusing to acknowledge it as an officially recognized on-campus group. By refusing to hear the university’s emergency appeal, the high court has allowed the lower court ruling to temporarily stand while the case is litigated on its merits in the courts.Official recognition by the school would have allowed the Pride Alliance to use school facilities as meeting spaces, put up fliers on school bulletin boards advertising its meetings and events, and have a booth set up at the school’s club fair. The student group’s lawyer, Katie Rosenfeld, told The Washington Post the shut-down is “a throwback to 50 years ago when the city of Jackson, Miss., closed all public swimming pools rather than comply with court orders to desegregate.”“The Pride Alliance seeks a safe space on campus, nothing more,” Rosenfeld wrote to The Post.
