The President of the United States said on Thursday (January 27) that he will nominate the nation’s first Black female Supreme Court Justice, following Justice Stephen Breyer‘s retirement.

“The person I will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. And that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court,” he said in the Roosevelt Room during Justice Breyer‘s retirement ceremony, via CNN.
“It’s long overdue in my view. I made that commitment during the campaign for president, and I will keep that commitment.”
He also said the selection process will be “rigorous,” and that he will “select a nominee worthy of Justice Breyer‘s legacy of excellence and decency.”
The court currently has six conservative justices appointed by Republican presidents, and three liberals appointed by Democrats.
