Piers Morgan, the host of TalkTV, has expressed his outrage over the "shameful" Post Office scandal that wrongfully imprisoned many post office workers.
The staff were blamed for financial errors caused by a faulty computer system, Horizon. From 1999 to 2015, 700 postmasters and postmistresses were prosecuted by the Post Office in what is now known as one of the biggest scandals in British history. Piers shared his thoughts on social media, calling it "an absolute disgrace".
The former Good Morning Britain presenter shared his views with his 8.7 million followers on X, previously known as Twitter. He wrote: "The @PostOffice scandal is an absolute disgrace, and Alan Bates is an absolute hero. "Where is the accountability for the shameful way these poor sub-postmasters were treated?" he added.
The Horizon scandal has been brought back into the spotlight thanks to ITV's new drama, Mr Bates vs The Post Office.
The TV show ends tonight and has been sharing some of the devastating stories from the people who worked in post offices and got into big trouble because of a mistake with the computer system. Lawyers say these workers were pushed to say they did something wrong or else they would go to jail. Alan Bates, who used to run a post office by the beach in Llandudno, helped win a big court fight against the Post Office in 2019 and is portrayed by Toby Jones in the ITV drama.
Lots of post office people had to give back money that the computers said was missing, losing their savings, jobs, and homes as a result. Speaking about the ITV drama, Alan said: "This is an enormously complex and vastly diverse story, which has now been made into a drama. It's not a factual documentary about what went on, it's a drama to engage people.
