Phone scam sees pensioner conned out of tens of thousands of pounds

Police are currently investigating a phone scam that has resulted in an elderly individual in their 80s being swindled out of a significant amount of money. Authorities are now urging the public to remain vigilant as the scam involves imposters posing as police officers.
In recent weeks, detectives have received a surge in reports regarding this fraudulent scheme. Shockingly, one victim was convinced to hand over a staggering £25,000.
The fraudsters employ a tactic in which they pretend to be a police officer from a London-based force. They inform the victim that someone has cloned their bank cards and is currently in custody. To resolve the issue, the bogus officer requests that the elderly person transfer funds to the police, promising reimbursement once the suspect is apprehended.
Detective inspector Daniel Parkinson issued a warning, stating: "We are advising anyone who receives such a call not to give any personal information and hang up straight away. We will never contact people to ask that they transfer money from an account to aid an investigation or request banking information. If anyone does get this type of request, it is a scam."
Parkinson emphasised the importance of spreading awareness among vulnerable individuals, saying: "Fraudsters often target geographical areas where they know elderly or vulnerable people live, so we are asking that if you have family or friends who are vulnerable in any way, that you make them aware of this warning."
