Philippe Clement has revealed he’s so engaged with Old Firm rivalry rules that he accepts resuming a friendship with Gordon Strachan is off limits.
Strachan and Clement were close at Coventry where the former Celtic boss started out on his managerial career in 1997. The ex-Sky Blues defender has previously told how Strachan and wife Lesley were once baby-sitters for his family in the West Midlands.
But Clement has agreed that it would be a schoolboy error to meet up with Strachan in Glasgow, given his former colleague’s Parkhead past and the fact Strachan’s son Gavin is on the Hoops’ backroom staff. Clement laments the lack of contact with Strachan but explained his stance when quizzed on his relationship with rival Old Firm boss Brendan Rodgers ahead of Sunday’s derby at Ibrox.
Clement said: “We don’t know each other really well personally. I met him [Rodgers] at the Celtic game, I know his career. I have a lot of respect, of course, for that and all the things that he has achieved in his career. We met each other also at Hampden for Scotland against Northern Ireland. We saw each other, we spoke about that. But I know in this city it’s complex, apparently.
“I even saw an interview with Gordon Strachan, who was my gaffer and who I had a really good relationship with. It’s not allowed, here in Glasgow, to have dinner together because his son is working on the coaching staff at Celtic. That’s a pity. I think you need to have this rivalry but, outside, I thought it was still a possibility for me. But apparently in this city, not. And so, I adapt in that way. So I respect the city and I respect our fans. So we will keep it in the way it was.”
Clement, 50, added that becoming a coach who could bring the best out of players felt
