Jacob Tremblay (“Wonder”) and BAFTA nominee Woody Norman (“C’mon, C’mon”) will star in writer-director Paul Barry’s indie drama “The Skeleton Tree.”The project, based on Iain Lawrence’s 2016 novel, follows two boys whose lives are changed forever when they survive a boating accident and end up stranded on a remote Alaskan shore. Through environmental calamities and unimaginable obstacles, the two fundamentally different kids must eventually trust and depend on each other in order to survive.Barry’s script made the 2021 Black List and he will produce along with 87North’s Kelly McCormick, Michael Collins, and Kristian Andresen via their 3Fifty Films banner, with 87North’s David Leitch executive producing.Sierra/Affinity is handling global sales of the film and will make it available to buyers for the first time at this month’s Cannes Film Market.

As the opening credits begin in “Cobweb,” eagle-eyed audience members might notice the appearance of the Point Grey production company. This is the company formed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, a studio known for its smart, incredibly popular comedy films and TV series.

In the vast realm of horror films, Cobweb emerges as a new addition inviting audiences into a world where appearances deceive and secrets hide beneath the surface. Directed by Samuel Bodin and written by Chris Thomas Devlin, and starring Lizzy Caplan, Woody Norman, Antony Starr, and Cleopatra Coleman, the movie’s strengths lie in the established atmosphere of intrigue and suspense. However, it can’t sustain that as it grapples with some missed opportunities and a lackluster conclusion that fails to bring closure to its narrative. 

Dennis Harvey Film Critic If “Barbarian” handily won as last year’s premier monster-in-the-basement movie, 2023’s prize might well end up going to “Cobweb” — a less inspired effort, but one decently creepy enough to get the job done. Chris Thomas Devlin’s script feels like a composite of some prior horror conceits, and there is not much depth to the narrative or characters. Still, director Samuel Bodin’s first theatrical feature is atmospheric, and departs from stock slasher conventions just enough to make for an entertaining if unexceptional scarefest. Lionsgate is releasing the U.S.-produced feature (which was apparently shot in Bulgaria in 2020) to limited theaters on July 21.  It begins with the familiar device of a child having night terrors that are probably not entirely in his or her imagination. Eight-year-old Peter (Woody Norman, from “C’mon C’mon”) is a sad loner, bullied at school, who’s woken from sleep by noises seemingly behind his bedroom wall — it sounds like something or somebody is moving around back there. When he taps on the wall, “it” taps back, which sends him screaming to his parents. But they dismiss it as an old house’s bumps in the night.

Clayton Davis With Oscar nominations just days away, the BAFTAs weighed in with their nominations for the 75th edition of the awards, which is set to take place on Sunday, March 13, with Rebel Wilson hosting the evening’s honors.There were many surprises and snubs among the field of nominees, where Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” led the charge, despite the filmmaker missing a nod. But, whether it was the complete shutouts of “Spencer” and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” or the inclusions of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi in director and adapted screenplay or Ann Dowd and Woody Norman in the supporting categories, the impact won’t be felt in the Oscar world since voting is now closed.Down below are the most notable snubs and surprises from the BAFTA nominations.

Clayton Davis It was a big swing for writer and director Mike Mills to cast Joaquin Phoenix in his beautiful drama “C’mon C’mon,” something he didn’t expect he would take on. “I think Joaquin is an incredibly smart and multiple layered person, who will always be surprising,” says Mills.

At the risk of being a little gauche and starting a piece quoting your own review, to paraphrase myself regardless, with A24’s lovely black and white comedic drama “C’mon C’mon,” filmmaker Mike Mills “solidifies his position as one of our greatest cinematic humanists, filmmaking empaths, and chroniclers of emotive struggle.” It’s that good, that probing of the human condition, and deeply soulful, melancholy, funny, and affecting in the way all Mills films are.

Great acting was everywhere in 2021. While we received the usual assortment of great performances in festival standouts and end-of-year awards contenders, we also found inspired performances in big-budget multiplex movies and no-budget horror.

Joaquin Phoenix can certainly be mercurial, cagey, and unpredictable in real life, depending on his mood and the kinds of questions you throw at him, but he’s also as affable and playful.

It’s really sweet to see a veteran actor creating a real connection with someone who’s just beginning their career. Joaquin Phoenix seemed like he’d gotten really close with 11-year-old actor Woody Norman, who played his nephew in his upcoming film C’mon C’mon. The pair posed for photos on the red carpet for a screening of the brand new movie in Beverly Hills on Tuesday November 16.

Everyone speaks in the same struggling-to-be-sensitive manner in C’mon C’mon, a film of intelligence and insight that nonetheless remains a low-key and sometimes frustrating study of big city short-fallers.
