Plans to close a car park in the Bathgate Hills which is popular with stargazers have been criticised by a local councillor. A consultation process is under way in Bathgate but local SNP member Willie Boyle described it as "Hobson's Choice" as it only offered a single option of closing the car park at night. And he said the public should have more of a say instead of being asked a loaded question. And he pointed out that the Hilltop car park was designed to serve an access path up to Cairnpapple which has now been fenced off.

A bid to install new double glazing and solar panels onto two old properties has sparked a warning over tough decisions councillors will face between preserving ancient townscapes and pushing for a climate-friendly future.

Councillors have warned that a covid recovery fund should not be used to ‘fill in gaps’ in council budgets, after £3million worth of projects was put before a committee that had just £150,000 to allocate.

A complex argument about planning rules  involving senior planning officers and lawyers dominated the debate at the latest hearing on the planning application. Councillors were told that because the height of the shed could not be reduced the application would have to be refused.

Planning officers said  that lockdown had prevented staff from visiting the garden to inspect the studio shed and its outlook. Their main complaint was that it sits atop decking and is higher than it should be by 40cm.Council leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick suggested there was room for compromise.“The studio is fine,” he said.
