The Toronto Film Festival is almost a month away and that means there are more films still to be announced as part of the 2023 slate. Today, TIFF revealed the 10 movies selected as part of the competition Platform program.

The red carpet may not have as many stars as in previous years, but the 2023 edition of the Venice Film Festival will feature a slew of highly anticipated films. And, likely, their directors taking center stage.

A lushly shot 19th-century historical drama led by Viggo Mortensen, it was — until a typically disorienting coda — close to linear in its colonialist-quest narrative, even as it moved in slow, ever-widening circles, and duly became Alonso’s most widely released film to date. The newly titled “Assassination” (the pic was previously called “2 Days/1963”) will be presented to buyers at the film market in Cannes this week, with Arclight Films handling international sales. Besides Martel and Erlingsson these include Bent Hamer, Małgorzata Szumowska, Paz Encina, Emma Dante, Marian Crişan, Juliette Garcia, Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Sergei Loznitsa, and Naomi Kawase.

Locarno Film Festival will honor French-Danish producer Marianne Slot with its Raimondo Rezzonico Award, given to figures who have played a major role in international production, at its 76th edition running from August 2 to 12.

Viggo Mortensen is set to direct and star alongside Vicky Krieps in the western love story for The Dead Don’t Hurt. The film will start shooting on October 12 in Canada.

Michaela Zee editor Ron Howard will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Directing at the 25th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 23. Recently, Howard directed and produced the biographical survival feature, “Thirteen Lives,” starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton. Based on the Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018, the film revolves around a team of divers and their mission to rescue twelve boys and the coach of a Thai soccer team who are trapped in a system of underground caves. “Thirteen Lives” will be screened at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, followed by an in-person conversation with Howard about his career.

Brendan Fraser will receive the American Riviera Award at the 38th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The 53-year-old actor, whose critically-acclaimed role in Darren Aronofsky‘s upcoming psychological drama "The Whale" is sparking best actor Oscar buzz, will be honored on Feb. 14, 2023, at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, California, the festival announced on Tuesday.
