‘She Loved Blossoms More’ Review: Grief Takes Audaciously Bizarro Shape In Greek Weird Wave Horror Oddity [Tribeca]

Inspired in part by 1970s experimental filmmaker Nikos Nikolaidis and jumpstarted in earnest in 2009 by Yorgos Lanthimos with “Dogtooth,” and perhaps to a lesser extent Panos H. Koutras’ “A Woman’s Way,” the so-called Greek Weird Wave movement quickly spread like wildfire in the country.

‘Rebel Country’ Review: Country’s Rebellious & Still-Needing-To-Evolve Roots Are Explored In New Music Doc [Tribeca]

What defines country music in America today? The new doc “Rebel Country” seems, at first, singularly focused on this question, but the film quickly makes clear that it has much more on its mind to consider, such as what led country music to where it is today and the challenges that many singers in its space have faced. It is a film that doesn’t hold your hand to tell the hard truths about country music’s evolution and history.

‘Sacramento’ Review: Michael Angarano Michael Cera & Kirsten Stewart Plunge Into Paternal Anxieties [Tribeca]

“Hey Mom, did you feel emotional the first time you drove in Sacramento?” asked Saoirse Ronan’s titular character in “Lady Bird” during an impassioned final monologue that makes the streets of the Californian capital glow. The city provides a similar site of reconciliation between a pair who’s grown gradually estranged in Michael Angarano’s “Sacramento.” It feels emotional, too, albeit in a more familiar way.

‘They’re Here’ Review: A Small Group Of UFO Believers Don’t Make For A Captivating Film [Tribeca]

It would seem that were one to gaze into the future of sci-fi filmmaking, society will never see an end to the concept of UFOs as a plot device, with “They’re Here” the latest, but far from greatest, contender for the spot of genre-defining piece presumably meant to spark a conversation about whether or not we remain alone in the vastness of space. While this particular outing may indeed be rich in onscreen conversation regarding the possibility of interstellar visitors between whoever might be occupying the film at any given moment, it’s far from eye-opening and, it would seem, purposely aimless.

‘Driver’ Review: Documentary Explores The Trials And Tribulations Of Female Trucking [Tribeca]

The life of a long-haul truck driver isn’t for everyone, nor could it be considered easy even for those years deep in the job; weeks/months away from home, the majority of any given 24-hour time period spent manipulating the steering wheel of a fully loaded 80,000-pound semi, sleep deprivation, the only meaningful social contact coming from the briefest of moments at a truck stop or over the chatter of a CB radio, and the list goes on.

‘Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman In Charge’ Review: A Standard Issue CNN-Like Flattering Portrait [Tribeca]

“I was having a man’s life in a woman’s body,” Diane von Furstenberg, famous Belgian fashion designer and businesswoman, says more than once in the new Hulu documentary. It’s a weird sentiment to say in a doc about female trailblazing empowerment, agency, and freedom, but one supposes it fits for the era when women’s lib was thriving, but perhaps not every woman was reaping its benefits.

‘Ultrasound’: A Low-Budget Christopher Nolan Is A Mesmerizing Head-Trip [Tribeca Review]

There is a particular type of mind-bending genre pulp that seems to arise from the wounded psyche of a freshman filmmaker. Often, these transfixing head-trips feel constructed to play better on repeat viewings by design — one thinks of Christopher Nolan’s “Following,” or Shane Carruth’s close to impenetrable “Primer.” Screening as part of Tribeca’s Midnight Movie selection, Rob Schroeder’s hypnotic debut “Ultrasound,” falls into this category.

For most adults under the age of forty, “I’m Rick James, bitch” was a statement of intent. The artefactual pop-culture catchphrase stems from The Chappelle Show sketch “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories,” which catapulted the “Super Freak” hitmaker back into public consciousness.
