Starz is developing a drama series centered on the life of African Warrior Queen Nzinga with American Gods’ Yetide Badaki set to star in the main role.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Starz is going back to gladiator school, with the network greelighting the new series “Spartacus: House of Ashur.” The series will see Nick Tarabay return as Ashur, while original “Spartacus” series creator Steven S. DeKnight onboard as executive producer and showrunner.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Stan, the Australian streaming service owned by Nine Entertainment, has renewed its content supply partnership with Lionsgate. The multi-year output agreement secures a slate of first-run premium scripted dramas from STARZ and Lionsgate and a new slate of theatrical films exclusive to Australian audiences. The agreement follows Stan’s renewal last year of a deal with Sony Pictures Television. Headlining the new shows expected to flow from the Lionsgate deal is espionage drama “Gray,” starring Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”), Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”) which is based on an original concept by bestselling novelist David Baldacci.

Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is expanding the franchise once again with a new series currently in development at Starz. DeKnight will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the as-yet-untitled project.

In a day and age where superhero storytelling is constantly pushing the boundaries and blurring the lines of television and films via Marvels Studios and shows like The Boys or The Umbrella Academy, Jupiter’s Legacy is decidedly old-hat. It may have gotten a pass five to ten years ago, but today it just feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Anybody tuning into Netflix’s “Pacific Rim: The Black” will likely expect more of what Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham gave them in 2013’s “Pacific Rim” (and, to much lesser effect, what Steven S. DeKnight gave them in 2018’s sequel, “Pacific Rim: Uprising”): Two-person crews piloting big-ass mechs slugging it out with equally big-ass monsters.

Netflix began its superhero programming with the massively popular Marvel series such as “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” and “Luke Cage.” However, those series didn’t last, as Disney now has the rights back to those.
