Skunk Anansie’s Skin: “I didn’t realise I was in an abusive relationship”

Skunk Anansie frontwoman Skin has opened up about her experience of an abusive relationship she was in as a teenager that inspired the band’s signature song ‘Weak’.Skin was speaking to Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess on a recent episode of his podcast, Tim’s Listening Party, on which he interviews guests about their seminal albums. The singer was asked about Skunk Anansie’s 1995 debut album ‘Paranoid & Sunburnt’, which ‘Weak’ is taken from.Skin recounted that ‘Weak’ was written in one night about a relationship she was in eight years prior at the age of 16 with a man who was much older.

Skunk Anansie frontwoman Skin has told NME about the “honour” of being asked to play the Grace Jones-curated Meltdown festival 2022, and revealed the memorable request letter that the icon sent her.Having been handpicked by Jones to perform at this June’s Meltdown festival in London alongside the likes of John Grant, Sky Ferreira, Peaches, Hot Chip and Greentea Peng, Skin described the invitation as “an honour”.“I was aghast because we were the first band she asked,” Skin told NME. “She wrote us a letter saying: ‘If you don’t do it, I’m going to break your neck!’ Something like that! It was a typical Grace Jones letter and it cracked me up.”In the ‘90s, Skin resented constant comparisons to Jones, considering it reductive to equate the two trailblazers because they are both outspoken black female performers.

Grace Jones has unveiled a series of new acts for this year’s Meltdown festival.Newly confirmed acts for this year’s festival, which Jones is curating, include Angelique Kidjo, John Grant, Sky Ferreira, Hot Chip and the Kasai Allstars, Desire Marea and Honey Dijon.They will join the existing, previously announced line-up of Peaches, Skunk Anansie, Meshell Ndegeocello, Oumou Sangaré, The Love Unlimited Synth Orchestra, Lee Fields, Baaba Maal and a special tribute to Lee ‘Scratch Perry’ by Adrian Sherwood.Jones will now also open and close the festival, which takes place between June 10-19. She was initially due to curate the show back in 2020 but that and last year’s event were both cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.In her new opening performance, Jones will be backed by an orchestra.
