‘We Own This City’ Review: David Simon’s Latest is Another Electrifying Story of Police & Politics

It’s disappointing to report that, contrary to its IMDb page, Treat Williams does not appear in all six episodes of “We Own This City,” George Pelecanos and David Simon’s new HBO miniseries, adapted from the book by Justin Fenton. But the good news is that when he finally does turn up in the penultimate episode, the show has generated such weight that his appearance has the proper power; for an epic saga of police corruption, nothing could feel more like the Pope giving his blessing than a cameo by the star of “Prince of the City.” READ MORE: The 70 Most Anticipated TV Shows & Mini-Series Of 2022 And that 1981 Sidney Lumet film really does feel like the template for “We Own This City,” perhaps more than Simon’s previous work – even “The Wire,” its most obvious point of comparison, to say nothing of the cops-and-dealers angles of “The Corner” or the knotty politics of “Show Me a Hero.” Lumet’s film told the true story of an elite unit of hotshot cops that helped themselves to copious money and contraband in ‘70s-era New York City; this miniseries tells the true story of similar unit, the Gun Trace Task Force, engaging in similar activities in Baltimore in the early 2000s.

What’s Behind the Will Smith and Chris Rock Feud?

Clayton Davis The feud between Will Smith and Chris Rock prior to the infamous “Oscar slap” goes back at least six years, according to sources. At the Governors Ball immediately following the telecast, Smith was the center of nearly every conversation. After congratulatory moments with nominees and winners like Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”), Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and Marlee Matlin, co-star of “CODA” which won best picture, everyone had wide eyes and questions about whether the assault was staged. Even the creative team behind Smith’s Oscar-winning role in “King Richard” seemed to be having difficulty processing the actor’s outburst.“I’ve known Will for two years and I’ve never known him to be like that,” “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green told Variety.

While the adult drama has largely migrated to television, there is one sub-genre that has received a new lease of life on late thanks to a trifecta of success: the rock biopic, which, in very recent years, has earned Best Picture Oscar nominations and wins, acclaim, and more importantly, actual box-office returns. While there has still been a few recent misses that haven’t tapped into any of those achievements (Aretha Franklin, “Respect”), with the success of the Academy-Award-nominated Queen biopic (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and, to a lesser extent, the Elton John one (“Rocketman”), studios continue forging ahead, confidently believing they can reach those same heights.

Clayton Davis Since the early 2000s, the Oscars have been in a rhythm of awarding darker movies with tinges of death, depression, racism and violence, illustrated by best picture winners such as “Million Dollar Baby” (2004), “Crash” (2005), “The Departed” (2006) and “No Country for Old Men” (2007). They stopped the trend with the uplifting “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), which nearly swept the ceremony, winning eight Oscars, the most of any film since that time.
