There’s a new awards show in town.

The nominations are in for the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards. Blake Shelton, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini, Laney Wilson, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Old Dominion and Zach Bryan will be vying for the night’s top honor, The People’s Artist award of 2023.

That’s the era when it took place out amid the pungent aromas of Nashville’s fairgrounds, not in and around a downtown stadium. Rather than resist that nostalgia for a quainter era, the CMA indulged it this year by selling vintage-looking T-shirts at merch booths — which, by the way, Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern says sold quite well. The festival is definitely embracing its past by including that former moniker in the title of a new documentary, “CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair,” premiering on Hulu today.

North Carolina country singer Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1998 classic “Fast Car” has done the unthinkable, passing the original track’s number six peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After reaching number eight on the chart last week, Combs’ rendition has now moved to number four, eclipsing its source material and joining Morgan Wallen’s number one track “Last Night” in the top five — the first time two country songs have sat there side by side since 2000.

Lainey Wilson revealed she has been cozying up next to Devlin "Duck" Hodges for more than two years.  After the country star and former NFL player stepped out together on the 2023 ACM Awards red carpet for the first time in May, Wilson, 31, admitted they have been dating for quite some time. Ed Sheeran could one day make the jump to country music, according to a new interview and a new collaboration with Luke Combs.While in Texas for the Academy of Country Music awards, Sheeran revealed in a new interview with Billboard that he would “love to transition into country,” adding that he speaks to his wife about the idea “all the time”.“I love the culture of it, I just love the songwriting. Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic At the 58th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, the top prize, entertainer of the year, was handed out to Chris Stapleton, even as Lainey Wilson and Hardy won in the the greatest number of categories, with four each — two of which they shared for the duet “Wait in the Truck.” Technically, Hardy walked away with six trophies, since the ACMs offer double awards for artists who co-write their nominated songs. Accepting for album of the year, Wilson said, “I wrote 300 songs during the pandemic.” Noting that some fans have said listening to her “Bell Bottom Country” album helped save their lives, Wilson said, “Writing these songs saved mine.” She quoted one of her own lines: “Be who you are, ’cause everybody else is taken.”

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The Academy of Country Music Awards nominations for 2023 are led by two of the newer artists in the genre who have crossed the threshold into becoming stars, Hardy, who has seven nods, and Lainey Wilson, who has six. Following close behind with five nominations each were Miranda Lambert, Luke Combs, Kane Brown and Cole Swindell. Lambert is the most veteran of this crop, having won a record number of ACM Awards over the past two decades. Of the nominations they picked up, Hardy and Wilson share a nod in three categories, as the duet they recorded, the domestic violence-themed “Wait in the Truck,” is in the running for song of the year, visual media of the year and event of the year.
