Jason Aldean, ABC blasted for ‘Try That in a Small Town’ CMA Fest set: ‘Disgrace’

“racist” and “pro-lynching.”Aldean, an outspoken conservative, performed the set on June 10 at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium in honor of the Country Music Association’s 50th anniversary. Hosted by Dierks Bentley, Elle King, and Lainey Wilson, Wednesday’s CMA Fest broadcast also featured performances by Miranda Lambert, Tim McGraw, Eric Church, and Luke Combs. But none was more divisive than Aldean’s concert, which aired one day after he called the accusations that he “released a pro-lynching song … not only meritless, but dangerous.”“Oh no CMA fest gonna get cancelled for playing this Jason aldean song,” one person tweeted Wednesday.“Honestly CMA fest allowing disgusting @Jason_Aldean to still perform is g r o s s,” another wrote.

Taylor Swift First Artist Since Beatles to Have Singles From Three Different Albums in Top 10

Thania Garcia Taylor Swift commands the Hot 100 with all 22 songs from her latest “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” occupying spots on the singles chart. Impressively, this means three singles from three different Swift albums are in the top 10 this week: “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault),” a new release from “Speak Now,” leads the pack at No. 5, joining “Cruel Summer,” from Swift’s “Lover” at No. 9, and “Karma,” from “Midnights” at No. 10. This feat puts Swift in the company of the Beatles as the only artists to have ever simultaneously scored top 10 singles from three of their own separate albums, according to Billboard. The band was the first to claim the benchmark in 1964 with “I Want To Hold Your Hand” at No. 1, “She Loves You” at No. 2 and “Please Please Me” at No. 6.

Taylor Swift Becomes First Woman in History to Have Four Albums in the Top 10 Simultaneously, as ‘Speak Now’ Has Huge Debut at No. 1

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Taylor Swift is setting some high chart benchmarks with the release of her “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” album. Not only has it debuted at No. 1 with the biggest numbers of the year so far for any release, but it’s one of four albums she now has in the top 10 of the album chart. According to Billboard, that’s the first time a woman has done that in the entire six-decade history of there being an album chart — and she’s one of only three artists to ever accomplish the feat. Swift also set a record for the female artist with the most No. 1 albums in history: She now has a dozen, moving ahead of Barbra Streisand, with whom she was formerly tied with 11 each.

Ed Sheeran, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Land Emmy Music Nominations; John Williams, ‘Daisy Jones’ Songs Among the Snubs

Jon Burlingame Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday. Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category. Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

Hulu Doc ‘CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair’ Recalls Country Festival’s Journey From Humble Fairgrounds to Stadium/Network Event

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A lot of people who go back in country music, be it the fans or even some who work in the industry in Nashville, refuse to call the CMA Music Festival anything other than “Fan Fair,” the name the annual event had in the far more humble ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. That’s the era when it took place out amid the pungent aromas of Nashville’s fairgrounds, not in and around a downtown stadium. Rather than resist that nostalgia for a quainter era, the CMA indulged it this year by selling vintage-looking T-shirts at merch booths — which, by the way, Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern says sold quite well. The festival is definitely embracing its past by including that former moniker in the title of a new documentary, “CMA Fest: 50 Years of Fan Fair,” premiering on Hulu today.

Morgan Wallen’s Winning Streak on Albums Chart Shuts Out Competition From Young Thug and Peso Pluma

Thania Garcia Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time,” and its lead single “Last Night,” have now spent 11 weeks simultaneously topping the albums and songs chart. The 36-song set has logged a total of 15 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 while the buzzy “Last Night” spends a 13th at the peak, surpassing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as the third-ever album to have ruled over Billboard 200 for at least 11 weeks while one of its songs leads on the Hot 100. “One Thing at a Time’s” 110,500 album units managed to ward off Young Thug’s surprise debut of “Business Is Business,” which entered the chart at No. 2 with 89,000 units and 106 million streams. In the past few months, Wallen has also been challenged by K-pop champions (Twice, Jimin, Agust D, Seventeen) and stars ranging from Ed Sheeran to Melanie Martinez, Niall Horan and others. To this day, Wallen’s 2021 album “Dangerous: The Double Album” also remains in the top 10 of the chart (this week it’s at No. 7).

With Luke Combs’ ‘Fast Car’ Cruising Up Behind Morgan Wallen, Country Owns Nos. 1-2 Spots on Hot 100 for First Time Since 1981

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic In case anyone is tempted to think of country music as a one-man phenomenon at present with Morgan Wallen’s seemingly indomitable runs atop multiple charts, Luke Combs has come along to remind everyone that this town is big enough for the both of ’em. They’re now forming a two-man roadblock at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as, between them, country owns the top two spots on that all-genre charts for the first time in 42 years. Wallen’s smash “Last Night” remains on top of the Hot 100 — no news there, since this is the song’s 14th week at No. 1. But it is a fresh development to have Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” cruising close up behind it, moving up one spot to No. 2. It’s the first time the genre has claimed Nos. 1-2 on Billboard’s primary chart since March 1981, when Eddie Rabbitt’s “I Love a Rainy Night” and Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” managed the same crossover-success feat.

How Jessica Chastain’s ‘George and Tammy’ Costumes Took Her on a Journey Across the Eras of Country Music

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “George & Tammy” costume designer Mitchell Travers’ approach to any project is to start with rock solid foundation. “You get asked a billion questions every day, and because I shoot moves so quickly, I love to have that ready,” he says. Travers reunited with Jessica Chastain (the two previously worked on “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) for the intimate look at country singer Tammy Wynette. With a storyline that spanned three decades, Travers needed to know the answer to any costume questions thrown at him. “When Tammy needed a coat, in the script, it was about what coat did she grab? Was it short? Long? Fitted? Oversized? Embellished?”

Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ Is Back at No. 1 for 13th Week

Thania Garcia Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” returns to No. 1 for the 13th non-consecutive week after spending the last two weeks in second place for the first time since its March debut. The album was only temporarily removed by Taylor Swift’s re-issued edition of “Midnights” and the monumental sales boost of K-pop group Stray Kids. The album returns to the summit with 111,500 equivalent album units sold in the United States, according to data collected by Luminate. That figure includes nearly 41 million on-demand streams and album sales tallied 4,500. With 13 weeks at No. 1, the 36-song set meets the mark set by Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti,” the biggest album to come out of 2022, and before that, Drake’s “Views” met the metric in 2106.
