Morgan Wallen Simultaneously Tops Albums and Singles Chart as Melanie Martinez’s ‘Portals’ Launches to No. 2

Thania Garcia Morgan Wallen leads the albums chart for a fifth consecutive week with his 36-song “One Thing at a Time,” — and in the latest tracking week, the set’s lead single, “Last Night,” also returns to No. 1 on the Hot 100 for a second week. Wallen’s third studio album logged the equivalent of 173,000 sales in the United States and 216 million streams, according to data by Luminate. The record debuted at No. 1 back in March — with 501,000 sales as the largest debut since Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” — and has not left the summit since. Not only that, Wallen has been credited as one of the largest contributors to the growing presence of country music on streaming platforms.

Boygenius on Making Their First Album, Working With Kristen Stewart and Being ‘Excited and Terrified’ to Play Coachella

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus spent the last few years of interviews generally demurring on when their group, Boygenius, would ever be collectively super again. There’s been a little bit of a Boygenius time-out, of course, since the trio’s fairly spontaneous debut EP came out in 2018 and the release of their first full album as a collective, “The Record,” on March 31. But it hasn’t been for a lack of thought and effort going on behind the scenes, as the waiting world has now learned. As Bridgers says in an interview with Variety, “We realized the other day that we’ve been making this record for longer than we haven’t been, as friends,” since she dates its origin point to the week after she issued her “Punisher” album in 2020.

The Record. In it, the singer-songwriters , Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker distill in just under four minutes the whole essence of friendships in your twenties—and they do so without a massive production budget, actors, or a sweeping narrative arc. In fact, the whole thing was filmed on an iPhone in a little over a day. The bandmates took turns filming each other doing "hooligan shit" (Baker's words) around Los Angeles, with stops at the Santa Monica Pier amusement park, an arcade, and a museum. While the concept ("women laughing") may sound contrived, their genuine love for each other transcends the screen, infecting the viewer with secondhand joy.

Kristen Stewart and Boygenius Celebrate Their Bloody, Monster Truck-Filled Short Film at Premiere: ‘It Felt Like a Fever Dream’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A short film that actor-turned-director Kristen Stewart made with the group Boygenius got an official Hollywood sendoff Thursday night at the El Rey Theatre, with a film premiere that also doubled as a launch party for the indie-rock trio’s new album, “The Record.” Stewart did not participate in the Q&A that Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus did with members of the press and public after the screening, but she stepped out to introduce the short film, which is essentially an interlocking combination of music videos for three songs from the new album: “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry” and “True Blue.” The imagery is sometimes sentimental, sometimes bracing and vivid. Bridgers sings “Emily I’m Sorry” in front of a monster truck rally. Palms are cut for a blood oath. And there is some lip-locking through copious blue paint. The framing device is sweet, though, beginning with one band member sleeping fitfully in bed and waking up at the end embraced in a group cuddle.

Phoebe Bridgers on trolls who “bullied” her on way to father’s funeral: “Grow the fuck up”

Phoebe Bridgers has spoken out after being “bullied” online when on her way to her father’s funeral. The Boygenius guitarist was speaking with her bandmates – Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker – in a new interview when she addressed the harassment she received from supposed “fans”.“I’m coming from a place of literally — I’m feeling it in my body as I’m saying it, but — people with my picture as their Twitter picture, who claim to like my music, fucking bullied me at the airport on the way to my father’s funeral this year,” she told Them.“I, at one of the lowest points of my life, saw people who claim to love me fucking dehumanise me and shame me and fucking bully me on the way to my dad’s wake.”While Bridgers didn’t explain what prompted the negative reaction, the interview does follow a time in January when the musician made headlines after being spotted with comedian Bo Burnham, shortly after her reported split from actor Paul Mescal. The Boygenius star announced the passing of her father with an Instagram post on January 3 – just over a week before the photos of her and Burnham at LAX airport were shared online.A post shared by Phoebe Bridgers (@phoebebridgers)She continued: “If you’re a kid and the internet somehow taught you that that’s an okay thing to do, then of course I hate capitalism and everything that led you to believe that it’s okay to do that.”Elsewhere, she also confirmed that these alleged “fans” were aware of her father’s passing when they made the comments, stating: “A lot of the top comments [were] like, ‘Hey, her dad just died, what are you guys doing?’”Using the interview as a way to speak directly to those who harass others online, she concluded: “I fucking hate you, and I hope you grow the fuck up.”“Most

Boygenius’ ‘The Record’ Finds an Ideal Blend of Stark Individuality and Supergroup Charm: Album Review

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The three women of Boygenius — Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker — have made alluding to their forebears a hallmark of their band. Witness the cover of their first EP in 2018, when they re-created the casual iconography of the debut album sleeve of a prior supergroup — Crosby, Stills & Nash — or when they posed as Nirvana on a recent Rolling Stone cover. On their first full-length album, prosaically titled “The Record,” the references come fast and furious, in song titles or random lines: the Beatles with “Revolution 0,” Sheryl Crow with “Not Strong Enough,” Virginia Woolf with “Letters to an Old Poet,” Joan Didion and the Cure with scattered borrowings or citations, and last but not least, Leonard Cohen with, um, “Leonard Cohen.”

Though each of the album’s 12 tracks could have fit nicely on one of their personal records, their work together takes on a brighter bolder existence, enabling them to light up individually and together at the same time.“Bridgers, Dacus and Baker did the tedious work of getting to know each other artistically and collaboratively and then poured what they found out into the world.

Lucy Dacus has finally given ‘Night Shift’ the visual treatment, five years after it was released. The fan favourite track is lifted from her 2018 album ‘Historian’. Incidentally, its chorus contains a reference to an event happening in five years: “You got a 9 to 5, so I’ll take the night shift / And I’ll never see you again if I can help it / In five years I hope the songs feel like covers / Dedicated to new lovers.”Dacus had previously told NPR that the track song was “the only break-up song she’d even written”, adding: “For a long time I didn’t believe expressing this sort of negativity was productive, but it’s less productive to resist the truth of a situation.
