The renewal extends the series’ record-breaking run as the longest running primetime medical drama in TV history, which it first became in 2019. It is also the longest running primetime scripted series in ABC history.
Grey’s Anatomy launched this week, but what songs have featured on the show so far? The show, which has been airing on ABC since 2005, is the network’s longest-running scripted primetime show, and has received a total of 38 Emmy Awards over its two-decade run to date. The new season sees Ellen Pompeo return once again as Dr. Meredith Grey, chief of general surgery at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Grey’s Anatomy is headed into its 20th season, and that big milestone is front and center in the series’ official poster, which features cast members arranged around the number 20. Like last year’s official cast photo, this year’s poster includes the main cast, plus recurring guest stars Debbie Allen (who is also Grey’s executive producer/director) and Scott Speedman. (The only person missing from last year’s group is Kelly McCreary who exited the series last season.)

Along with the pickup, which was fully expected, ABC also confirmed Deadline’s report that Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner for season 20. She replaces longtime Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff, who is leaving both series at the end of this season.

In addition, series executive producer Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner on Season 20. Marinis takes over from Krista Vernoff, who was reported to be stepping down from “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spinoff “Station 19” back in January. The Season 19 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” will air on May 18. The show has seen a number of exits this season, most notably Vernoff and Kelly McCreary (who’s played Dr. Maggie Pierce for nine seasons) — and series lead Ellen Pompeo, kind of. Pompeo has been with the show since it debuted, but in the Feb. 23 episode, her character Meredith Grey moved from Seattle to Boston. She will continue to provide the voiceover at the beginning and end of each episodes, and she’ll also appear on the finale. Pompeo’s status for Season 20 is still up in the air.
