Nominees who felt more like usual suspects — including Soundgarden, the White Stripes, Iron Maiden, Warren Zevon and the new-wave mash-up of Joy Division/New Order — were all passed over this year.Instead, it is indeed a new order with three women leading the list — Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow and Missy Elliott — who couldn’t be more different, ranging from alt-rock to hip-hop. And rounding out the 2023 inductees are George Michael, a gay pop superstar; Willie Nelson, a country music icon; and the Spinners, a black R&B vocal group.Michael’s induction, coming seven years after the “Faith” singer died at 53, is the latest posthumous honor coming after Whitney Houston, the Notorious B.I.G., Nina Simone and Tupac Shakur in recent years. It’s certainly great to see Nelson — who just turned 90 last Saturday — get his flowers while he can still smell them.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Reveals Class of 2023: Willie Nelson, Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine and More

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Willie Nelson just got an only slightly late 90th birthday present: an impending induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The country music legend was one of seven music figures announced Wednesday morning as having been voted into the hall, along with Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael and the Spinners. There are six more inductees beyond that list, with the distinction of being selected by a select Hall of Fame committee to join the seven performers who were voted in via general balloting. These are singer Chaka Khan, instrumentalist-producer Al Kooper and lyricist Bernie Taupin, all in the “musical excellence” category; pioneering rock guitarist Link Wray and hip-hop originator DJ Kool Herc in the “musical influence” division; and “Soul Train” TV host Don Cornelius as the recipient of the annual Ahmet Ertegun Award.

The Proclaimers removed from Coronation playlist due to “anti-monarchy views”

The Proclaimers have been removed from the official Coronation playlist due to their “anti-monarchy views”.Craig and Charlie Reid – better recognised as The Proclaimers – will no longer feature on the playlist made for the upcoming coronation of King Charles III, which will take place on 6 May at London’s Westminster Abbey.Originally, their hit track ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) was included on the 27-song playlist, curated for the event by The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), however, has been revoked due to a wave of complaints centering around their “anti-monarchy views”.As described by the BBC, one of the examples of these views was demonstrated by Charlie Reid last year, after a man in Oxford was arrested for exclaiming “Who elected him?” during a proclamation event for the king in September. Reid weighed in on the moment in an interview, stating: “I thought that guy spoke for me, and he speaks for loads of other people.

Courtney Love Slams Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for Lack of Female Inductees, Saying it ‘Reeks of Sexist Gatekeeping’

Julia MacCary editor Courtney Love has taken aim at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, penning a scathing essay that calls out the dearth of women and Black artists showcased in the Cleveland-based organization. “If so few women are being inducted into the Rock Hall, then the nominating committee is broken,” Love wrote in an op-ed for the Guardian. “If so few Black artists, so few women of colour, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled. Music is a lifeforce that is constantly evolving – and they can’t keep up. Shame on HBO for propping up this farce.” Love did not hold back when calling out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Barely 8% of its inductees are female. The canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility,” wrote Love, a musician, songwriter and actor who led the 1990s band Hole and was married to the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain (who was posthumously inducted).

Björk has spoken to NME about the sexism often levelled against her and Kate Bush, as well as how the recent success of the latter’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ shows a clear change in attitudes. The Icelandic icon was speaking to NME for the week’s Big Read cover story when she described her enthusiasm for Gen-Z’s “radical” and evolving attitudes towards matters including the environment and gender equality.Discussing how she “can’t even start to describe” her happiness at Bush’s 1985 hit ‘Running Up That Hill’ dominating the charts again after being featured in the most recent season of Stranger Things, Björk recalled how dismissive male critics once were of the ‘Hounds Of Love’ star.Explaining how critics throughout the ’80s and ’90s were often pre-occupied with “rock guys” singing about “tits, beer and heroin abuse”, she felt that “writing from a woman’s point of view was considered a lesser artform”.“I was always quite offended by how often Kate Bush was written about like she was insane or a crazy witch – or me being a crazy elf,” Björk told NME. “We are producers.
