Naman Ramachandran The 67th BFI London Film Festival has unveiled its full lineup, which includes galas and special presentations of films by contemporary masters. As previously announced, Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” will open the festival and Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s “The Kitchen” will close it.

Michaela Zee Nancy Buirski, the award-winning documentary filmmaker known for “The Loving Story” and “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy,” has died. Augusta Films shared the news of her death on Wednesday in a statement, writing, “Nancy’s extensive and rich body of work delved into a wide range of social, cultural and historical issues with keen insight, humanity and above all, artistry.” Buirski directed 2011’s “The Loving Story,” a documentary about the Supreme Court case of Loving v.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a new feature from acclaimed filmmaker, Jeff Nichols. Back in 2016, he released two films, both of which were hits with critics, “Loving” and “Midnight Special.” Since then, he’s been attached to a number of projects, including an “A Quiet Place” prequel film, but nothing came to fruition.

The Telluride Film Festival, a key part of the fall festival circuit launching awards season and perhaps some major Academy Award contenders, announced the wide-ranging lineup of films for its landmark 50th edition. The fest kicks off Thursday and runs through Labor Day and will feature world premieres of Oscar winners Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers (Focus Features), Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn (Amazon) and Free Solo filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s narrative feature Nyad (Netflix).

The 2023 Telluride Film Festival will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with an extra day of screenings and an impressive 20 world premieres. Notable films making their debuts in the mountains include Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” follow-up, “Saltburn”; Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” with Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell; Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” starring Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy; and Ethan Hawke‘s latest directorial effort, “Wildcat,” co-starring Telluride resident Laura Linney.

Just in time for Oscar season, 20th Century Studios has dated the Jeff Nichols written and directed, The Bikeriders, which follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members. The pic will open on Dec. 1 this year.

Automatik, the production company behind “La La Land,” is merging with Range Media Players, TheWrap has confirmed. As part of the merger, Automatik executives Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger have been named partners and co-presidents of film and production at Range.

EXCLUSIVE: Tye Sheridan is launching his new production company, Dogwood Pictures with its debut film, Black Flies, is set to play in competition at the 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, the pic reunites Sheridan with Sean Penn after over a decade since Malick’s The Tree of Life. Sheridan first became involved with the film in 2018 and continued on throughout the film’s execution and release.

In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, host Mike DeAngelo sways to the rhythm of a sweet duet with Showtime’s mini-series, “George & Tammy.” Created by Abe Sylvia (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Nurse Jackie,” The Affair”), the six-episode mini-series dives into the true tumultuous whirlwind romance between famous country musicians George Jones (Michael Shannon) and Tammy Wynette (Jessica Chastain).

Butler found himself lost in the moment, watching his fellow actor. “Jeff called cut and Mike walks away,” Butler recalls. “And Tom turns to me goes, ‘It doesn’t get any better than that.’” Butler says Hardy was referencing Shannon’s performance, which he says, “wasn’t even watching an actor, it was watching a human being living in front of you.”  The 31-year-old actor could also be referring to the past year of his life, which found his career launched from roles in shows including “Zoey 101” and “The Carrie Diaries” into a bona-fide, world-famous movie star thanks to his turn in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” And not just any movie star, but the kind of old-school throwback to a Golden Age that is becoming rarer and rarer in Hollywood where his talent is as recognized as his star quality.

Austin Butler just played the legendary musician in the movie "Elvis" and will now star in director Jeff Nichols' next movie "The Bikeriders" with Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy.  According to Variety, "The Bikeriders" is named after the 1967 Danny Lyon photography book and "tells an original story about a '60s Midwestern motorcycle club as it evolves over the course of a decade from a community for outsiders into a far more sinister gang."  The movie has brought Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones onboard to produce with Fred Berger as the films executive producer. Believe it or not, it’s been six years since we’ve last seen a Jeff Nichols film. Sure, back in 2016, we were lucky enough to get the release of “Midnight Special” and “Loving,” but since then the filmmaker has been a bit silent.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “As Bestas,” a French-Spanish movie, has been added to Cannes Première, the new section dedicated to world premieres for movies that are slightly more mainstream, similarly to the out-of-competition strand.

A Quiet Place franchise has been confirmed to be a prequel.The upcoming third film in the franchise was given the title A Quiet Place: Day One by Paramount Pictures at CinemaCon in Las Vegas (via Entertainment Weekly), confirming it will cover events on the first day the alien creatures descended upon Earth.In last year’s sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, a flashback sequence showed how the first day played out in Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn Abbott’s (Emily Blunt) small town – as an asteroid-like object hurtles from the sky.This third instalment however is a spin-off film in the franchise, based on an idea from Krasinski. It’s set to be directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig) after original director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special) dropped out.A Quiet Place: Day One is scheduled to be released September 22, 2023.A direct sequel to A Quiet Place Part II is scheduled to be released in 2025 after it was announced in February this year.

The film is separate from the next chapter of the main series, “A Quiet Place — Part III,” which is expected to see John Krasinski return as director with the cast led by Emily Blunt and will be released in 2025. “A Quiet Place: Day One” will be directed by “Pig” filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, who took over after Jeff Nichols exited the project.

Cannes has announced its jury for the 75th annual festival next month, naming French actor Vincent Lindon as president of this year’s competition jury that will hand out the Palme D’Or, as well as naming stars Rebecca Hall and Noomi Rapace to the jury. Of the eight members on this year’s Cannes main competition jury, Lindon, Hall and Rapace will also be joined by “A Hero” director Asghar Farhadi, “Midnight Special” director Jeff Nichols, Indian actress Deepika Padukone, Italian actress and director Jasmine Trinca, “Les Miserables” actor and director Ladj Ly and “The Worst Person in the World” director Joachim Trier.
