‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Writer Joby Harold Explains Why Lucasfilm Chose To Use Little Leia In ‘Star Wars’ Series

While whispers of young Princess Leia coming to the “Star Wars” universe goes back years (we even mentioned it on a podcast last year), it wasn’t really until an “Obi-Wan Kenobi” casting reveal from a few months later that seemed to truly cement the fact we’d see the other Skywalker twin make a return after the passing of Carrie Fisher. Star Wars has a problem with racist fans – why doesn't Disney do more?

It was heartbreaking – but sadly not surprising – to hear of the pure vitriol aimed at Obi-Wan Kenobi star Moses Ingram, who has been subjected to ‘hundreds’ of racist messages since the new series launched on Disney Plus last month.  But it was more heartwarming to see her co-star Ewan McGregor show support by speaking out on her behalf, as well as the official Star Wars Twitter account publicly condemning the trolling. Finally, after years of Disney being at the centre of race rows regarding some of its other non-white stars, it felt like a step in the right direction in cracking down on the hostility towards Black actors in these prominent roles.

How ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Writer Justified Obi-Wan Not Knowing Anakin Was Alive

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” so far happens at the end of Episode 2, when Ewan McGregor’s Jedi knight learns that 10 years after their lightsaber battle on Mustafar, Anakin Skywalker is very much alive – and is now going by Darth Vader. It’s a piece of storytelling that many fans took for granted, assuming that Obi-Wan would know that Anakin made it out of Mustafar alive. And for the show’s head writer Joby Harold, the moment came about organically during the writing process – although it wasn’t without checking to ensure that, canonically, he would be correct in depicting Obi-Wan as unaware of Anakin’s survival.“That was actually not something I pitched originally,” Harold told TheWrap during a recent interview.
