HBO has renewed Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon for a second season.The show’s renewal comes after the first episode debuted on Sunday (August 21), which has been watched by 20 million viewers in the US across linear, on demand and HBO Max platforms, according to the network.Francesca Orsi, executive vp of HBO programming, said: “We are beyond proud of what the entire House Of The Dragon team has accomplished with season one. After the critical success of its first season, “House Of The Dragon” assured HBO that the “Game Of Thrones” brand would rebound after David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ disastrous final season of the original show.

Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon will debut on HBO in June. The news was confirmed on Monday (March 4) by J.B. Perrette, the streaming and gaming chief for Warner Bros.

MTV has announced the nominees for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Top Gun: Maverick leads the film side with six nominations. It tied with Stranger Things and The Last Of Us, also with six noms each on the scripted television side. Jersey Shore Family Vacation, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules head up unscripted noms with two each.

Zack Sharf Ever since “House of the Dragon” started its debut season, fans have been sensing queer undertones in the relationship between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. The characters were played in their younger years by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey, the latter of whom confirmed to Variety that the actors discussed the queer intimacy that might exist between their characters. “I mean, we kind of started that discourse,” Carey said. “We were in the rehearsal room…I believe it’s Episode 4. It’s not necessarily something we had talked about yet. We were doing a scene, and Milly and I looked at each other like, ‘It kind of felt like we were about to kiss? That was really weird!’ And so we talked about it.” 

Fans of “House Of The Dragon” are annoyed with the frequent “time jumps” (two in 8 episodes, yes!) in the series. However, George RR Martin defended screenwriter Ryan J Condal and says that both time leaps have been “handled very well.”

Game of Thrones was so sprawling that viewers had trouble remembering all the characters, many of whom didn’t meet until the final seasons, concerns itself with just the Targaryen family and those who marry into it. Like the Roys of Succession, the players here are vying to be the favorite at the moment their king, Viserys, finally dies, so they can inherit his title and powers. And the central conflict comes down to two former best friends: Rhaenyra, the king’s daughter and eldest child, named by him as his heir, and Alicent, the king’s second wife, mother to his only sons. Rhaenyra is by far the more likable of the two.
