Natalie Oganesyan editor “Grey’s Anatomy” cast members and outgoing showrunner Krista Vernoff on Sunday shared a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the show’s new intern class and teased the trajectory of Season 19’s relationships. The conversation took place during the “Grey’s Anatomy” panel at PaleyFest LA, held in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre and moderated by Emmy nominee T.R. Knight — who portrayed Dr. George O’Malley on the show for 15 years. Besides Vernoff, the talk included cast members Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis and Niko Terho. Debbie Allen, who stars and also serves as EP, was not in attendance despite being scheduled to appear.

It’s official – Grey’s Anatomy will be back for a 20th season!

Grey’s Anatomy continues to write TV history with a renewal for a landmark 20th season, extending its record as the longest running primetime medical drama. Along with the pickup, which was fully expected, ABC also confirmed Deadline’s report that Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner for season 20. She replaces longtime Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff, who is leaving both series at the end of this season.

In addition, series executive producer Meg Marinis will serve as showrunner on Season 20. Marinis takes over from Krista Vernoff, who was reported to be stepping down from “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spinoff “Station 19” back in January. The Season 19 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” will air on May 18. The show has seen a number of exits this season, most notably Vernoff and Kelly McCreary (who’s played Dr. Maggie Pierce for nine seasons) — and series lead Ellen Pompeo, kind of. Pompeo has been with the show since it debuted, but in the Feb. 23 episode, her character Meredith Grey moved from Seattle to Boston. She will continue to provide the voiceover at the beginning and end of each episodes, and she’ll also appear on the finale. Pompeo’s status for Season 20 is still up in the air.

Now ABC has set the season-finale dates for its series — including Ellen Pompeo’s return to Grey’s Anatomy — along with the final episodes of long-running comedy The Goldbergs and drama A Million Little Things.
