It is described as a psychological drama, which is told via multiple timelines and perspectives.

Victoria Pedretti (You) will lead the cast of Saint X, Hulu’s eight-part series from writer Leila Gerstein and director Dee Rees.

It is about a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation and how it creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.Hulu has given the show an eight-episode order. Leila Gerstein will write and executive produce the adapatation.

There has to be an explanation for what went wrong here. How does a project, co-written and directed by Dee Rees, her follow up to the Academy Award nominated Mudbound, fall so far off the rails? Rees not only once again had the supporting of Netflix, but was adapting the Joan Didian novel The Last Thing He Wanted.

Willem Dafoe has to date had a long and diverse acting career that’s seen him work with some of the world’s most renowned filmmakers, among them Martin Scorsese, Zhang Yimou, William Friedkin, Oliver Stone and Dee Rees. Dafoe has a fondness for playing misunderstood oddballs and men who march to their own beat, which somewhat explains why his turn as a kind, generous motel manager in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project was greeted with surprise.

I watch a lot of movies and usually like when the story is "one step ahead of me." But The Last Thing He Wanted, a Netflix film that made its debut at Sundance, is disorienting, phony, and impossible to follow, and makes for two very uncomfortable hours.

After “Pariah” and “Mudbound,” director Dee Rees returns to the Sundance Film Festival with her next feature, “The Last Thing He Wanted,” a political thriller based on a 1996 Joan Didion novel. The adapted screenplay follows a reporter named Elena McMahon (Anne Hathaway) and her photojournalist friend (Rosie Perez) as they chase a complicated story off the coast of Costa Rica.

Carey Mulligan has made a conscious decision in recent years to collaborate with female directors, from Sarah Gavron (“Suffragette”) to Dee Rees (“Mudbound”). On Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival, she’ll unveil “Promising Young Woman,” a thriller written and directed by Emerald Fennell, about a heroine out for revenge after experiencing a traumatic abuse.
