The “Predator” action, thriller-horror franchise has really been through the wringer over the years. After the first classic film, directed by John McTiernan, things quickly went south.

20th Century Studios announced today that its action-thriller Prey, marking the newest entry in the Predator franchise, will debut exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. on August 5th, unspooling as a Star+ Original in Latin America, and as a Star Original on Disney+ in all other territories.

What’s going on with “The Predator” franchise you ask? Well, if you remember the stories from last year, you know it’s turned into “Prey,” an all-new action-thriller from 20th Century Studios directed by Dan Trachtenberg (“The Boys,” “10 Cloverfield Lane”). This newest entry in the “Predator” franchise, will stream August 5, 2022, exclusively on Hulu.

We’ve known for a while now that 20th Century Studios was hoping to reboot the “Predator” franchise with a new film in the series from director Dan Trachtenberg. The working title that was used during filming was simply called “Skulls,” but no other information was revealed.

On Disney+ Day, the studio announced that its new Predator movie was set to drop in summer 2022, and will be entitled Prey. For some time, the pic was shot under the title Skulls. 

Director Dan Trachtenberg (“10 Cloverfield,” “The Boys“) is currently shooting his secretive “Predator 5” movie in Calgary, but that isn’t the only sci-fi property he’s expected to breath new life into.

A follow-up to Universal’s 1995 movie Waterworld, starring Kevin Costner, is in the works for the small screen. The project, which hails from original producer John Davis and his Davis Entertainment is in very early development at UCP, sources tell Deadline. Davis tells Collider, which first reported the project, that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is attached to direct.

It’s hard to believe that four years after the release of “10 Cloverfield Lane,” we still don’t have a new feature film from director Dan Trachtenberg. Sure, he’s circled a number of projects, including being one of the many filmmakers to come aboard and leave “Uncharted.” He’s even got a new “Predator” film lined up.

I do not envy anyone writing a horror franchise, much less those writing on one that only has one good installment like “Predator.” John McTiernan‘s 1987 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is god-tier classic. Still, unlike James Cameron’s “Aliens,” this franchise was never able to find a second installment that breathed new life into it.
