Zack Sharf Digital News Director “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer are shutting down at least one fan theory about the upcoming ending to their blockbuster Netflix series. On the red carpet for the new “Stranger Things” play in London, the duo went on record to Metro saying the series will not end with a reveal that all the events in the Upside Down were just a dream. One fan theory about the “Stranger Things” ending alleges all the events on screen during the show’s run were actually just the main characters playing an elaborate and very long game of Dungeons and Dragons, a favorite among the characters since the show’s first season.

It’s also about giving deserved respect to genres and recognizing the allies who do the work to ensure those stories are appropriately told. That’s what director Dan Trachtenberg achieves with the science-fiction horror flick “Prey,” while working hand-in-hand with Indigenous producer Jhane Myers.

Honorable mentions: “Fifteen Million Merits,” “Be Right Back,” “Shut Up and Dance” and “Black Museum.” The final “it was all a dream” twist in “Playtest” is the cherry on top of a deliciously twisted “Black Mirror” sundae. Wyatt Russell plays Cooper, who accepts an offer to test out an advanced, virtual-reality horror video game but gets much more trauma than he signed up for. The game taps into Cooper’s darkest fears, such as inheriting his late father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and delivers enough Dan Trachtenberg-directed jump scares to leave you unsure of what’s really going on until the final seconds.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg wanted his “Predator” spinoff, which is set in 1719, to be shot in a naturalistic way, so cinematographer Jeff Cutter made use of available light whenever possible — especially from fire and the moon. In the movie, Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) tracks and hunts down a killer alien through the woods. “I would use fire as much as possible and augment it if we had to,” says Cutter.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor“Prey” composer Sarah Schachner factored in two elements when scoring the 1700s-set entry in the “Predator” franchise. “We were making a ‘Predator’ film with all the fun gory action and suspense you’d expect, but the music had to simultaneously tell Naru’s emotional story and her evolution,” she says. The action thriller, set in the Comanche nation, follows Naru, played by Amber Midthunder.
What to watch: 7 movies & shows to stream this week - July 22What to watch: 7 movies & shows to stream this week - July 29“Prey” is one of the most exciting releases this week. The film is a prequel to the “Predator” franchise, starring Naru (Amber Midthunder), a Comanche warrior who faces off with the terrifying and tech-savvy alien. It’s directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who has experience reinvigorating franchises and crafting tense sequences.
The Predator franchise is the ugly step-child of horror monster cannon. Fans know about it, are aware of it, but don’t necessarily give it the credit it deserves. With the original film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the sequel with Danny Glover, a bunch of Alien vs. Predator crossover films, and an attempt at a reboot in 2018, it is the one franchise that lacks consistency. However, director Dan Trachtenberg gives the film a new edge by inserting the titular monster in an 18th-century setting to see how the people hold up against the advanced technology of the warrior creature.

There’s this whole throughline in “Prey” about “bring it home,” meaning either a mountain line or the alien. “10 Cloverfield Lane” came out in 2016, and you’ve done a ton of great TV work and developed a bunch of projects. But for you, was part of “Prey” trying to “bring it home?”Dan Trachtenberg: I think I relate to this character more than anything else I’ve made except maybe Huey from “The Boys.” I think certainly it’s about me feeling the pressure of making this movie, but also everything in my life since childhood of feeling like, I think I can do something, I think I’m capable of doing it, and having outside forces thinking I can’t, then having my inside forces saying: Maybe you can’t.

Hunt or be hunted, says the new “Predator” prequel film, “Prey,” but don’t underestimate the threat level either, the movie often reminds us. It’s a movie, like the original, ultimately about survival and outwitting your would-be slayer.

(Coming from someone who’s a big fan of the original and also 2010’s Predators.) Love how the story is a deeply personal journey — one powered by Comanche tradition just as much as it is by Predator-sparked thrills.”“Prey is exactly what fans want in a Predator movie — bloody deaths, insane weapons, and ties to other films in the franchise.
