Tom Grater International Film ReporterThe 2020 Toronto International Film festival has unveiled its line-up of In Conversation With… events for this year.The six talks are: Halle Berry, who will discuss her new feature Bruised; Claire Denis and Barry Jenkins, speaking together about their careers, Ava DuVernay, who will discuss art, activism and Black Lives Matter; Saoirse Ronan, discussing her performances that have seen her score four Oscar nominations at the age of just 26; Barry Levinson

Without a doubt, Claire Denis is one of the best filmmakers working today. Over the decades, she has continuously created some of the most interesting and unique features to grace the big screen, including her most recent film, “High Life,” starring Robert Pattinson.

Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska, who will helm her English-language debut Silent Twins starring Letitia Wright this fall, has been set to direct dystopian crime drama Hot Spot.Producers are Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska at Poland’s Madants, who produced Claire Denis’ High Life and Agnieszka Holland’s Mr Jones, alongside Before Midnight producer Christos V.

As we approach the half-way mark in June, it’s clear that 2020 isn’t going so hot. Good news is in short supply, as the world deals with a pandemic and the US is in the middle of a social uprising.

YouTube isn’t here to save the film festival season, but the platform’s We Are One event is surely attempting to fill the void left by the numerous canceled events due to COVID-19 this year. And with the online festival expected to begin later this week, the platform announced its first-ever line-up consisting of over 100 films, including 13 world premieres, 31 online premieres, and five international online premieres.

Business at Berlin's European Film Market tends to be a slow burn, but the 2020 EFM got off with a bang as A24 signed the first major deal before the doors of market headquarters the Martin Gropius Bau even opened.On the eve of Berlin, the indie distributor snatched up Claire Denis’ next movie, the combination thriller/love story The Stars at Noon, for North America in a low seven-figure deal with CAA Media Finance.

A24 has bought North American rights to the thriller “The Stars at Noon,” starring Robert Pattinson and Margaret Qualley.
