Pratt is not Italian, after all, and many fans were left baffled when the movie’s first trailer dropped last October and revealed Pratt’s Brooklyn-heavy Mario voice. It’s not a concern for the film’s directors, Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath. The filmmakers told Total Film magazine that casting Pratt made sense given the Mario at the center of their story. “It’s a bit of an origin tale. It’s the story of Mario becoming Super Mario,” Horvath said about the film, adding that finding the perfect Mario voice meant finding an actor who could believably portray a plumber from Brooklyn who is “a blue-collar guy from a family of Italian immigrants.”

The “Super Mario Bros. Movie” is set to launch in China two days before the U.S. and Canada release date on April 7.

Universal/Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has become the latest Hollywood title to secure a release date in China. The big-screen spin on the iconic videogame franchise will hit Chinese cinemas on April 5, in time for Ching Ming Festival and in step with some other international markets as well as two days before the domestic release on April 7.

It’s been a busy couple of years for writer-director James Gunn. After turning the crew of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies into bonafide stars of the Marvel universe, Gunn was fired from the series, only to bring his superhero know-how to Warner Bros for “The Suicide Squad” and its popular HBO Max spinoff series, “Peacemaker.” But after a reconciliation with Marvel, Gunn is finally bringing his space trilogy to a close with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie without a supersized threat. And this entry has a pair of them: Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), a super-being created by Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) to go after the Guardians and the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a mad scientist responsible for the creation of Rocket (Bradley Cooper).

The highly anticipated “The Super Mario Bros.”  will be the second American film adaptation of the popular Nintendo game. After the disastrous 1993 live-action “Super Mario Bros.” movie, which starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario Mario and Luigi Mario (yeah…), a new film version of the video game franchise languished in development hell until reports of the video game developer discussing with Illumination entertainment to do an animated film centering around the popular iconic character gamers grew to know and love.  Chris Pratt and Charlie Day will be voicing Mario and Luigi, while Anya Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach.
