Earlier this week, the Venice Film Festival announced the line-up for its 80th edition, including new films from Michael Mann, Bradley Cooper, David Fincher, Woody Allen, and more. Now it’s time for Venice’s parallel section, Giornate Degli Autori (previously known as Venice Days), to promote the line-up of its 20th edition.

Venice parallel section Giornate degli Autori (GdA) has unveiled the selection for its 20th edition running from August 30 to September 9, featuring a surprise short by Céline Sciamma, a new feature by Teona Strugar Mitevska as well as a tribute to late Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Mk2 Films is set to reunite with Joachim Trier following “The Worst Person in the World,” the Norwegian helmer’s Cannes prize-winning and Oscar-nominated romantic comedy which was also a worldwide box-office hit. The Paris-based company will handle international sales and co-produce alongside Juliette Schrameck at Agat Films, who was also a co-producer on “The Worst Person in the World,” alongside Nathanaël Karmitz and Elisha Karmitz for MK Production. Mk2 films, Schrameck and the Karmitz brothers join producers Maria Ekerhovd at Mer Film and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar at Eye Eye Pictures.  Trier is writing his untitled sixth feature with his long-term collaborator Eskil Vogt, with whom he shared an Oscar nomination for best screenplay. “It is an ambitious yet playful family drama. An intimate, moving, and often funny film about family, memory, and how we need to rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves in order to survive,” said the pair.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Noémie Merlant, the French actor of “Tár,” is reteaming with Celine Sciamma, who directed her in “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” for her sophomore outing, “The Balconettes.” The fantastical comedy horror movie is being written by Merlant with the collaboration of Céline Sciamma. MK2 Films will launch sales at the Cannes Film Market. Filming is slated to begin this summer. Set in a boiling Marseille neighborhood plagued by a heat wave, the movie revolves around three roommates who gleefully meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their balcony. Until a late-night drink turns into a bloody affair. Merlant stars in the film alongside Souheila Yacoub (“Dune”) and Sanda Codreanu (“Mi Iubita Mon Amour”).

His acclaimed Haruki Murakami adaptation certainly got the most attention culminating in the International Feature Oscar win last month, but his three-part anthology film “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” deserves some more, too (it did win runner up at the Berlin Film Festival).

It’s a bit pointless complaining about ignored or passed-over Oscar-worthy films, but if one were going to do such a thing, a pretty damn valid complaint would be French filmmaker Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of A Lady On Fire” being looked over by the Academy in the 2019/2020 season. ironically, that’s the same year that NEON, the company behind ‘Portrait,’ defeated the odds, surpassed the giants with more money around then, and won Best Picture for “Parasite.” Perhaps it was a combination of NEON having to put all their eggs in one basket, sacrificing another, and the Academy just seemingly over the moon about Bong Joon-Ho’s masterful film.

Well, even though it appears that cinephiles outside of France are going to have to wait a bit longer to see her next feature, “Petite Maman,” the French are getting that film in June.

Petite Maman, Céline Sciamma's follow-up to her 2019 international breakthrough Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a more intimate affair.
