Apple TV+ has officially picked up Murderbot, a 10-episode sci-fi drama series starring and executive produced by Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård (Succession). Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, The Murderbot Diaries, the project hails from Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) and Paramount Television Studios.

BreAnna Bell A sci-fi series based on Martha Wells novels, “The Murderbot Diaries,” has landed at Apple TV+. Hailing from “About a Boy” creators Chris and Paul Weitz, “Murderbots” follows a self-hacking security android who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable “clients.” Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe. Alexander Skarsgård will lead the series and will serve as executive producer.

EXCLUSIVE: Blumhouse/Sony/Depth of Field’s They Listen has added Greg Hill to the Chris Weitz written and directed feature. The pic reps Hill’s second collaboration with director Weitz, having worked with him on MGM’s post-World War II thriller Operation Finale, as part of the ensemble cast that included Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, Melanie Laurent and Nick Kroll. 

John Cho and Katherine Waterston will headline Sony-Blumhouse-Depth of Field’s They Listen, directed by Chris Weitz. A theatrical release of Aug. 25, 2023 has been set; it’s the only wide release that weekend. You’ll remember the Cho thriller Searching debuted in late summer and was a microbudget hit grossing over $26M stateside, and north of $75M WW off a less than a million production cost.

Roadside Attractions has acquired domestic rights to “Moving On,” the feature film starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. The production company announced the news Monday.The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, will be theatrically released on March 17, 2023.Written and directed by Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”), “Moving On” stars Fonda and Tomlin as estranged pals who reunite to seek revenge on the petulant widower (Malcolm McDowell) of their recently deceased best friend.

Disney+ has set Thursday, September 8 for the premiere of Pinocchio, Robert Zemeckis’ live-action adaptation starring Tom Hanks as Gepetto. The release is timed for Disney+ Day, a lead-in to the D23 Expo in Anaheim CA. The streamer also released the first footage in a teaser trailer below, along with key art.

Tom Hank’s Geppetto!  Disney+ released the first look from the upcoming live-action o on Wednesday. In the still, Hanks is in full character as the woodcarver, who carefully constructed and built the puppet with love.

In the first look photo at Robert Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio,” Tom Hanks dressed as Geppetto admires at his puppet boy wonder and re-imagines a scene that closely resembles the 1940 animated classic. The live-action film combines Zemeckis’ CG visual effects in order to bring Pinocchio to life on Geppetto’s quest to help him become a real boy.
