Halloween is coming early this year, as Blumhouse and AMC Theatres have partnered to launch the Halfway To Halloween Film Festival, which will take place at over 100 AMC theaters in 40 U.S. cities from March 29 to April 2.

The past year has been tough on so many people. In the US alone (the rest of the world has been in a similar situation, of course), more than 500,000 people have died, businesses have been shut down (with many never reopening), and millions have lost their jobs, all the result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s response to the deadly virus.

Yesterday, AMC Theatres rejoiced as the company announced that it has secured enough funding (nearly $1 billion) to keep afloat during the pandemic and well into 2021. But that doesn’t mean the company thinks everything in the film industry is going really well right now, as more studios push films out of spring and into the second half of the year.

While AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, and other major theater chains were hoping that 2021 would usher in a return to “normalcy” when it comes to people heading out to the cinema to watch a film on the big screen, it’s clear that’s not happening. In fact, we’ve seen studios already announce more delays that see most major films moving to the second half of 2021, indicating that theater chains are in for another rough six months, at least.

AMC Theatres was already hurting before WarnerMedia made its announcement that it was sending WB’s entire 2021 film slate to HBO Max on the same day as theaters. And now, after that decision? Let’s just say AMC is none too pleased with the idea that one of the biggest studios in the world is threatening the future of the theatrical experience.

Well, it appears that the CEO might have been speaking a bit too optimistically, as new statements from AMC point to a company on the verge of collapse.

As the business week begins today, we’re already seeing massive financial implications from the news of “No Time to Die” being delayed and Cineworld shutting down its US and UK cinemas.

If you were someone that went to buy tickets for future showings this weekend at an AMC location, you might have noticed something odd. When Disney announced plans to take it’s $200 million “Mulan” remake and send it straight to Disney+ streaming service with an additional $30 fee, people were shocked.

Last week, a landmark deal between AMC Theatres and NBCUniversal rocked the film industry, as the two agreed to shorten the exclusive theatrical windows for films from nearly three months to merely 17 days, allowing for the film studio to release features on Premium VOD less than three weeks after they debut on the big screen.

Over the past three months, we’ve been fairly tongue-in-cheek with our insistence that Warner Bros.’ upcoming film, “Tenet,” really is going to dictate the return of cinemas after the COVID-19 pandemic. Obviously, “Tenet” is set to be the first major film to arrive in theaters since March and, as such, is allowing for big cinema chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to reopen their doors and make some money.

Well, that certainly didn’t take long. AMC Theatres and most of the theatrical chains were playing a disingenuous game of “hey, don’t look at me, we just play movies, talk to your Governors” bullshit with the whole COVID-19, theatrical re-openings and face-masks conversation (if a business can refuse you with “no shoes, no shirt” policy, they sure as hell can do a similar mask one during a pandemic if they choose).

The last 24 hours have not been kind to AMC Theatres. Much like the rules laid out by Regal Cinemas and Cinemark, AMC announced its safety guidelines for when the cinema chain reopens in July.

This comes after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world’s cinemas to shut down for months.
