‘Barbenheimer’ Fever: Meet the Film Lovers Turning ‘Barbie’-‘Oppenheimer’ Double Features Into the Movie Event of the Year

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Over a single weekend, 28-year-old Toronto resident Daniel Konikoff will experience two life-changing events. On July 23, he’s getting married. Two days before, he’s going to the movies with his bride-to-be and their entire wedding party for a double feature of Greta Gerwig’s very pink romp “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s extremely dark historical drama “Oppenheimer.” “It stemmed from a joke, and then we started to actually create a plan,” Konikoff says. “So, the double bill is a little wedding-adjacent party.” As soon as the second movie lets out at 1 a.m. — “it’s bed!” he adds. “And then we drive to the venue. There’s not a lot of sleep, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”

AMC Theatres CEO Defends Sightline Pricing Changes & Will Watch Customer Reaction “Very Closely”

When it was announced that AMC Theatres was going to adopt a new ticketing structure, dubbed Sightline, reactions were largely negative. (I might have ranted a bit myself.) Basically, the plan feels like a new way for AMC Theatres to punish its frequent customers by raising the prices on the “best” seats while offering a discount on what are clearly terrible seats that probably shouldn’t exist in the first place.

AMC Theatres’ New Idea To Make Money Is To Charge More For The Best Seats

Let’s be honest folks, just because “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” were able to become monster hits and earn well north of $1 billion each, the cinema chains are still struggling, mightily. Sure, franchise films and blockbusters can potentially do really well, but by and large, films are seeing diminished box office returns in an era where streaming is omnipresent and there are more choices than ever before.

AMC Theatres Launches Massive Ad Campaign Starring Nicole Kidman To Encourage People To Go Back To Cinemas

AMC Theatres has been in the news quite a bit over the past couple of years. Not only is it the largest cinema chain in the world, which also makes it the most affected by the pandemic and its shutdown of Hollywood, but AMC has also made headlines because of how it is one of the recent “meme stocks” that have been inflated greatly due to investors banding together on social media.

After Flirting With Bankruptcy, AMC Theatres CEO Lands A $3.75 Million Bonus

The past year has been tough on so many people. In the US alone (the rest of the world has been in a similar situation, of course), more than 500,000 people have died, businesses have been shut down (with many never reopening), and millions have lost their jobs, all the result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s response to the deadly virus.

Yesterday, AMC Theatres rejoiced as the company announced that it has secured enough funding (nearly $1 billion) to keep afloat during the pandemic and well into 2021. But that doesn’t mean the company thinks everything in the film industry is going really well right now, as more studios push films out of spring and into the second half of the year.

While AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, and other major theater chains were hoping that 2021 would usher in a return to “normalcy” when it comes to people heading out to the cinema to watch a film on the big screen, it’s clear that’s not happening. In fact, we’ve seen studios already announce more delays that see most major films moving to the second half of 2021, indicating that theater chains are in for another rough six months, at least.

The other day, AMC Theatres released an SEC filing that basically said the company is going to run out of cash by the end of 2020 or early 2021 if the box office doesn’t improve over the next few months. And guess what? With “Soul” moving to Disney+, “Coming 2 America” heading to Amazon, and the major studio offerings for the next couple of months reduced to about four films (for now), things aren’t looking great for theater owners.

When movie theaters reopen and everyone can rush back to see Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the question remains whether or not it’s actually safe to do so? Sure, the large cinema chains have released statements about the precautions they’re taking to ensure the safety of the customers, but there’s no denying that it seems a bit crazy to sit in an enclosed space with a bunch of other people for more than two hours while some wear masks and others don’t (taking them off to eat popcorn and drink

As we’ve written about dozens of times already, cinemas in the US are facing an existential crisis right now and the COVID-19 pandemic is only adding to this issue. Over the past three months, we’ve been fairly tongue-in-cheek with our insistence that Warner Bros.’ upcoming film, “Tenet,” really is going to dictate the return of cinemas after the COVID-19 pandemic. Obviously, “Tenet” is set to be the first major film to arrive in theaters since March and, as such, is allowing for big cinema chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to reopen their doors and make some money.

Well, that certainly didn’t take long. AMC Theatres and most of the theatrical chains were playing a disingenuous game of “hey, don’t look at me, we just play movies, talk to your Governors” bullshit with the whole COVID-19, theatrical re-openings and face-masks conversation (if a business can refuse you with “no shoes, no shirt” policy, they sure as hell can do a similar mask one during a pandemic if they choose).
