‘Perry Mason’ Draws Largest Premiere Night Multi-Platform Viewership For HBO Series In Almost 2 Years

Despite a pretty great career leading up to the release of “Call Me By Your Name,” there are a large number of fans that really discovered filmmaker Luca Guadagnino from his Oscar-nominated work on that feature. And then to follow that up with a “Suspiria” remake might have been a bit of a sharp left turn for most.

On HBO’s new miniseries Perry Mason,wildly contrasting aspects of 1930s Los Angeles are spotlighted by differences in costume. “With the Great Depression happening and also with the movie industry happening, there was this strange juxtaposition in the city,” says Emma Potter, costume designer of the series, which stars Matthew Rhys as the famed private investigator.

Will Thorne Staff WriterIt doesn’t take a wily detective to work out that “Perry Mason” premiered to strong numbers for HBO on Sunday night.The reboot of the classic series was watched by a total of 1.7 million viewers across all platforms, which represents the network’s strongest debut for any series in almost two years. For comparison, the season debut of “Watchmen” drew 1.5 million viewers, and the first episode of “The Outsider” delivered 1.2 million viewers.

Perry Mason‘s eponymous private eye was first pegged for Robert Downey Jr., but eventually Matthew Rhys (The Americans) landed the role in HBO’s new reboot of the classic TV sleuth. A step down in terms of star power, yes, but the Welshman fits Perry’s grubby aesthetic perfectly.
