After a long week of work or school, many households look forward to a well-earned takeaway from the chippy. And no fish supper is complete without a generous sprinkling of salt and spraying of vinegar.
However, people are only just discovering that their suppers aren't all that they seem to be. That's because the vinegar that some chip shops use isn't actually vinegar.
Certain chip shops will instead opt for something called 'non-brewed condiment'. This vinegar replacement recreates the taste, but cannot actually be classified as vinegar.
Most will never actually notice the fake vinegar as it tastes so similar. It also offers some benefits over the popular chip-topper as it is cheaper to buy, easier to store since it can be concentrate and certain brands are halal or gluten-free, reports LadBible.
Previously, YouTuber Tom Scott spoke about the condiment which is often thought to be vinegar in a video titled: 'The Fake Vinegar In British Fish and Chip Shops'.
He explained: "Legally, it can’t be described as vinegar. Trading standards are really clear on that. It cannot be put in the little bottles that people traditionally associate with vinegar."
A viewer commented on the video, saying: "My whole life I have wondered why I could never replicate the taste of chip shop vinegar at home. Now I know the truth."
So there you have it - the vinegar that you may get from your local chippy might not be 'real', but the chances are you wouldn't know unless you asked.
