A Scots prisoner has died in jail while serving a 22-year sentence for historic sexual offences. Alex Daly died at HMP Addiewell, in West Lothian, last week.
The Scottish Prison Service has confirmed the 66-year-old, from Scotter, Lincolnshire, had passed away on June 1. He was jailed in September 2023 at Grimsby Crown Court.
He was found guilty of charges spanning an eight-year period between the 1990s and early 2000s. He was convicted of four counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency with a child.
A Fatal Accident Inquiry will take place in due course, as is the case following the death of any prisoner in Scotland, and Edinburgh Live reports the matter has been reported to both police and the Procurator Fiscal.
As Grimbsy Live reported at the time of Daly's sentencing, the offences against him were reported to Humberside Police in 2020.
Following the trial, investigating officer Paul Wells said: “Daly committed a string of heinous offences over a series of years, and I am reassured that he is now off our streets.
"I want to praise the victim for their bravery in coming forward and helping to put this evil man behind bars.
