The incident unfolded at around 8pm on Wednesday January 11 when officers were called to a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Nicolson Street.
Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service, sped to the scene and the 51-year-old victim was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries. His condition is described as critical.
No one else was injured. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a Lothian Bus with smashed windows abandoned in the middle of the road surrounded by debris following the collision, according to EdinburghLive.
