Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A lineup of about two dozen stars will salute Paul Simon at this year’s annual Americana Music Association pre-Grammys event, happening at the Troubadour the night before the big ceremony, on Feb. 3.
The lineup includes a significant portion of artists who are up for Grammys the following night in the Americana, folk and/or American roots categories. The 2024 nominees set to perform in West Hollywood the night before they head downtown for the awards include Jason Isbell with 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden, Madison Cunningham, Allison Russell, Brandy Clark, Rufus Wainwright, Nickel Creek’s Sara and Sean Watkins, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Keith Secor and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Other favorites scheduled to perform — many with their own history of Grammy wins or nominations — include Jackson Browne, Marcus King, Natalia LaFourcade, Molly Tuttle (performing with Secor), Andrew Bird, Susanna Hoffs with Grace Bowers, Gaby Moreno, Ruthie Foster, Bobby Rush, John Vincent III, Silvana Estrada, Larkin Poe, Brett Dennen and Johnnyswim. Other high-profile guests are in the docket to be added by next Saturday, and it’s not impossible that some of the above names could drop out, due to the inevitable flux of Grammy week.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday through the Troubadour website. The house band will feature Daniel Rhine on bass, Val McCallum on guitar, Jim Oblon also on guitar, Mark Stepro on drums, Lee Pardini on keys, Molly Jenson on vocals, CJ Camerieri on trumpet and Sylvain Carton on sax.
Two of the musicians, Obion and Camerieri, have been in Simon’s band in the past. Simon himself is mostly retired from live performance and not expected to join the lineup, although he

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic When it comes to Tennessee’s recently Grammy-winning musical heroes, the state’s House Republicans are making it clear — they’re good with Paramore, but not so much Allison Russell, for reasons yet to be explained. Tennessee Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) brought resolutions before the body to honor the Grammy achievements of Paramore, who won for best rock album and best alternative music performance, and Russell, who picked up her first Grammy for best American roots performance for the song “Eve Was Black.” Although both Russell and Paramore singer Hayley Williams have made their displeasure with the GOP-controlled legislature known in the past, only one of these two proclamations was blocked.

“We Are the World,” the historic 1985 charity single — where even Bob Dylan was intimidated by the star-studded session.Surrounded by everyone from Ray Charles, Diana Ross and Paul Simon to Tina Turner, Willie Nelson and Billy Joel, the Bard was clearly out of sorts — and out of his element. But it took one particular legend to help another one find his solo mojo.“The secret agent to help him get comfortable was Stevie Wonder,” says David Breskin — one of two journalists invited by producer Quincy Jones to cover the momentous occasion — in the documentary. “Stevie is an insanely great mimic,” continues Breskin, explaining how the R&B master used his special talents to help the folk god: “Stevie sang it ventriloquially in Dylan’s voice.”It’s a dead-on impression that impresses even Dylan, who — in the only time the room is cleared to give one artist his space — finally nails his part.Such is the spirit of unity that — against all odds and egos — pulled together the recording of “We Are the World” on Jan.
