Former midfielder Owen Hargreaves has called on Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to hand a starting berth to Alejandro Garnacho ahead of next week's Europa League knockout round play-off tie second-leg against Barcelona at Old Trafford.
The 18-year-old, who has scored three goals in all competitions for the Reds this season, stepped off the bench in Thursday night's first-leg at the Camp Nou with just under ten minutes of normal time left on the clock. He replaced Jadon Sancho and took up residency on the left-wing.
By the time of his introduction, the scores were level at 2-2, meaning he still had the chance to write his name into United folklore and score a famous winner. He went close to being in a one-on-one situation with Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, only for him to miscalculate the flight of a long clearance and lose possession, when he looked set to race clear.

United created a wealth of chances throughout the contest and were evidently disappointed not to have registered a famous win, with Barcelona looking vulnerable in transitions and lacking the crisp and precise passing they are often renowned for. With that said, Hargreaves believes next Thursday's second meeting between the two sides could be an ideal opportunity for Garnacho to flex his muscles.
"I don't think they [Barcelona] controlled the game," Hargreaves told BT Sport. "And that is a big thing for Xavi and Barcelona.
"It felt like in the transitions they were too vulnerable, they were too open. And it feels like there will be more of those situations at Old Trafford if they are going to play that way. Maybe Garnacho plays, I think he will be perfect in that."
