Author Diana Gabaldon has dropped another hint that the upcoming seventh season could be the last one - and the prequel may be an entirely new cast altogether.
The 70-year-old, who is currently working on the 10th and final book in the Outlander series, took to social media and suggested that Sam and Caitriona will not be featured in the prequel.
In response to a tweet from a fan that read: "Question, what are you, all of us and the cast and crew going to do when all of this is over? When you finish writing the prequel, will there be an all new cast? Will you decide to retire? I’ll miss you all tremendously."
She said: "Well, I should think there will have to be a new cast, won't there?" Fans were quick to share what they thought of the cryptic tweet. One wrote: "We will miss all of the former cast!"
"All good things must come to an Eed, but that doesn't mean that it can't be born again. I look for Willie to fill his father's shoes and find the love of his life," another wrote.
With another adding: "Yes, which will then become a different show. I hope to still be here."
Some fans were hopeful that old faces would appear in the prequel. One wrote: "I would assume Dougal, Column & Murtah will be in it. Maybe even Mrs. Fitz!"
Looking ahead to how Outlander will end, it was previously confirmed that Sam Heughan and Diana Gabaldon are the only two who know how the series will end.
Caitriona Balfe confirmed that she prefers to be kept in the dark, although she did share her thoughts on how she would like it to end for the pair.
