Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Columbia Records has entered into a joint venture with former Capitol Records chairman-CEO Jeff Vaughn to launch Signal Records, the company announced Wednesday. The Los Angeles-based imprint will operate as a new label with Columbia Records of Sony Music Entertainment and begin operations immediately, with an artist roster to be announced in the coming weeks. As founder and CEO, Vaughn will lead the company’s creative direction and business development while utilizing Columbia’s marketing, promotion, and label services. Ron Perry, Chairman & CEO of Columbia Records, said, “I’ve admired Jeff’s work from afar for a while. He has incredible musical instincts, an infectious work ethic, and great passion. I’m looking forward to working together on this new chapter.”

EXCLUSIVE: On the heels of Oscar-winner Phil Tippett’s directorial debut Mad God, the film’s producers Tippett Studio and Ultra 8 Pictures are teaming up on Tippett Productions, a new Canadian-based venture.
Tippett Canada President Gary Mundell (who also serves as California-based Tippett Studio’s COO) is spearheading the new production label with Toronto-based Colin Geddes of Ultra 8 Pictures.
Tippett is the two-time Oscar-winning VFX veteran known for his pioneering work on franchises including Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Twilight and RoboCop. Geddes is a producer, Shudder curator and longtime former TIFF Midnight Madness programmer, who served as exec producer on Mad God.
The team are launching Tippett Productions to make film and TV projects from a roster of animation and VFX artists, including several IPs from Tippett himself.
Development at the new shingle, Tippett Productions, will be led by Geddes and his partner, writer-producer Katarina Gligorijevic, who will work closely with Mundell and other members of the Tippett team on the first slate of projects. Tippett Studio expanded earlier this year into Canada, opening an office in Toronto.
“As a visual effects company, Tippett Studio is consistently at the top of its game, with projects like The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, Locke and Key and others. But we’re also eager to build on the incredible momentum we’ve achieved with Mad God and expand into making more of our own original content. With Phil’s creative vision and the team we’ve assembled, this feels like the next natural evolution of the Tippett brand,” said Mundell.

She was 88. The classic film, based on Ken Kesey’s novel and exploring the repressive tendency of authority through the story of the patients and staff of a psych ward, won five Oscars in 1976, including best picture and best actor for Jack Nicholson. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was the first film in more than four decades to sweep the major categories of best picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay. It was nominated for an additional four Oscars and was also a substantial box office hit.

The festival operated as a virtual event in 2020 under pandemic conditions. But was forced to cancel its 2021 edition. The town has no permanent movie theater and the festival uses temporary facilities, but previous editions have attracted big crowds. All events are open to the public and are free of charge. Over four days (Dec. 8-11, 2022) organizers will put on a mix of some twenty film screenings, public discussions and Q&A sessions with local audiences. This year, the LPFF will add a second night venue.
