It’s a logical comparison: “Rocketman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are both biopics about British rock stars whose careers launched in the 1970s — Elton John and late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, respectively — and both were directed by Dexter Fletcher. So we had to ask the latest Academy Award winner for his thoughts.

The rousing, life-affirming "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman (Paramount) won the Oscar for best original song at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 9).

Elton John’s end-titles theme for his own biopic, “Rocketman,” won the best original song award at Sunday’s Academy Awards, his first Oscar since he won for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King” at the 1995 ceremony.

At the 2020 Oscars tonight, Elton John won Best Original Song for the second time in his career. “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman won the award over songs from Toy Story 4 (by Randy Newman), Frozen II (“Into the Unknown”), Breakthrough (by Diane Warren), and Harriet (by Cynthia Erivo). “Wow, this doesn’t suck,” Taupin said as he and John stepped onstage to accept their Oscar.

Tonight at the 2020 Oscars, Elton John took the stage to perform his new original song from the biopic Rocketman. John’s performance of “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” featured back-up singers, a red grand piano, and a jumbo pair of star-shaped sunglasses. Watch it all go down below.

John and longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin, were nominated Monday (Jan. 13) for an Academy Award for best original song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” the uplifting tune that closes Rocketman, the fantastical film about John’s life.
