One of the city's most iconic buildings was lit up last night in celebration of a very special anniversary. The University of Manchester kicked off its bicentenary commemorations with a night of lights, poetry, and performances.
Staff, students, alumni and the local community, gathered at the institution's Oxford Road campus on Wednesday (January 17) to experience a magical evening tour, with special lights 'illuminating iconic places and spaces' around the site. It was the opening event for the University's year of celebration, which will see them pay tribute to their unique history, people, incredible achievements and the impact they’ve made, in Manchester and around the world.
The University of Manchester was founded in 1824 as the Manchester Royal School of Medicine and the Manchester Mechanics' Institute. It was officially named 'the University of Manchester' in 2004 when The Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) merged into a single institution.
