Ofgem warning over £400 energy bill discount scam

Ofgem has issued a warning to energy customers after it became aware of a phone scam.
Suppliers are being urged by Ofgem to warn consumers of the scams and have written to them to ensure that customers remain updated with the latest security information. It comes after energy payers all across the country wait for the first instalment of the government's energy discount which will come into effect from October 1.
The Energy Bills Support Scheme will provide customers with a total discount of £400 split up between six months (October to March 2023). The discount will be applied to energy accounts automatically via different energy suppliers, such as British Gas, which means customers don't need to apply for the discount.

Despite this, customers are being targeted by a scam which claims they must follow a link to apply for the discount. It's important to note that while the links may look legitimate, they are designed to steal a customer's private information such as their banking details.
An Ofgem spokesperson said: “Protecting consumers is our top priority and it is alarming that vulnerable customers are being preyed upon in this way when people are already struggling so much. That’s why, as energy regulator, on top of issuing our own warnings and advice, we have asked all energy suppliers to ensure clear and up to date information on scams is easily accessible on their websites.
"We take these attempts to exploit consumers very seriously and work with the National Cyber Security Centre to prevent these malicious attacks. If people are unsure if something is a scam they should pause, check and don’t let callers
