NYFF 2020 Full Lineup Revealed: Films From Steve McQueen, Chloe Zhao, Jia Zhangke & More

In light of the slew of canceled film festivals in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s New York Film Festival is hoping to pull out all the stops and become the premier film event in the US. And as a way of showing what that means, the NYFF organizers announced the Spotlight section for this year’s fest.

Maura Higgins, Molly-Mae Hague and Helen Flanagan are just some of the famous faces that celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham works with and makes them look picture-perfect for the red carpet and Instagram.The Midlands-based stylist has made a name for himself over the past few years training with Nicky Clarke, before developing his own luxury services including the "Jay Birmingham Experience", where he accompanies his celebrity clients across the world to Dubai, Spain, Greece and New York.

Mangrove is set to open the BFI London Film Festival (LFF) later this year.The film, which stars Black Panther‘s Letitia Wright, will tell the story of the Mangrove Nine – a group of Black activists who clashed with London police in 1970 during a protest march, which led to a highly publicised trial.Mangrove forms part of McQueen’s Small Axe anthology series, and will premiere at New York Film Festival before having its European premiere at LFF, later airing on BBC One and Amazon Prime Video

Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray have reteamed for a new twist on family and love in the trailer for On the Rocks, which dropped on Tuesday. Starring Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans, the A24 film under its new partnership with Apple TV+ is about a young New York mother (Jones) faced with sudden doubts about her marriage with husband (Wayans) and teams up with her audacious playboy father (Murray) to investigate her husband.

NEW YORK -- This year's New York Film Festival will be held largely virtually and in outdoor screenings, organizers said Thursday while unveiling a lineup featuring new films from Chloe Zhao, Steve McQueen and Azazel Jacobs. The major fall film festivals, which often jockey for the chance to premiere the season's top films, have this year worked in concert to salvage what they can from a more limited array of films and a drastic reduction in attendees.

Moments ago, the 2020 New York Film Festival announced their Main Slate, coming after the big three announcements recently. NYFF will be different, obviously, given the pandemic, but there’s still 25 movies that will make up the fest.

Ever since its announcement as part of this year’s Cannes Film Festival Official Selections, Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology series from Amazon has been positioned as one of the 2020 fall festival darlings. And it appears that is playing out at this year’s New York Film Festival, which will not only debut a feature-length episode of the anthology as its Opening Night film but will also showcase two additional episodes as part of the main slate.

Unlike many of its fall film festival brethren, this year’s Telluride Film Festival was forced to cancel instead of hosting an in-person and/or digital event. Unfortunately, unlike Venice, TIFF, and others, Telluride finds itself in the unlucky position of happening in the United States, where COVID-19 is still a major issue and continues to spike all across the country.

Moments ago, the New York Film Festival announced their Opening Night Selection, and it’s not a title you’d expect. Going in a different direction than at least I anticipated, they’ve tapped Steve McQueen’s Lovers Rock as the Opener.
