NPR to Lay Off 10% of Workforce

Jamie Lee Curtis expressed support for the push to de-gender acting categories following her win for Best Supporting Actress at the 2023 Oscars.  «As the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand,» Curtis said of the question regarding the gendering of Best Actor and Actress categories. «In all the areas, in all the branches...we're not anywhere near there.» Curtis also acknowledged the difficulty of still maintaining opportunities for women while expanding categories to include the larger gender spectrum. «To de-gender the category, I'm also concerned will diminish the opportunities for more women, which is something I have also been working hard to promote,» Curtis said.

Angelique Jackson Hot on the heels of a historic opening weekend for “Creed III,” Jonathan Majors has set his next movie with Amazon Studios, titled “Da Understudy.” Majors will star in and produce the film, under his Tall Street Productions banner, partnering with Westbrook Studios and Amazon. The project tells the story of “life imitating art when the understudy of a Broadway production finds a role he’s willing to kill for.” Tom Hamada, Zach Stauss and Tyler Cole wrote the screenplay, which is based on an original story by Cole and developed in-house by Westbrook. Amazon Studios landed the script on spec in a competitive situation. Sources tell Variety Spike Lee is in very early talks to direct the film, which would reunite the filmmaker and Majors after 2020’s “Da 5 Bloods.”

The new cast members are: Andre Braugher, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Al Mitchell, Dan Perrault, Bronson Pinchot, Susan Kelechi Watson, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Mary Wiseman. The group joins previously announced series lead Uzo Aduba. The official logline for the series states, “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective (Aduba). One disastrous State Dinner. ‘The Residence’ is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor NPR will lay off 10% of its workers, or at least 100 employees, as the public radio broadcaster has been pinched by a slowdown in advertising and sponsorship revenue particularly for its lineup of podcasts. Final decisions about which jobs will be cut are expected to be made by March 20, in consultation with unions representing NPR’s workers, according to a memo NPR CEO John Lansing sent to staff Wednesday. The not-for-profit organization has a yearly budget of about $300 million; in 2023, revenue is likely to fall short of that by $30 million-$32 million, he said, according to an NPR report. “At a time when we are doing some of our most ambitious and essential work, the global economy remains uncertain. As a result, the ad industry has weakened and we are grappling with a sharp decline in our revenues from corporate sponsors,” Lansing wrote in the memo, according to the New York Times.

NPR plans to layoff about 10% of its current staff due to the soft ad market and a drop in revenue from corporate sponsors, as well as uncertainties in the global economy overall.
